What twist Savage 6br

I am going to get a new Savage in 6br and I am perplexed at what rate of twist I need. I plan to mostly shoot the local 300 yard br and a couple of 200 yard br matches. My plans are to skim bed it, break it in, and work up a load, which to me looks like the standard Varget and CCI450 primers with lapua brass is the standard. After I see how it shoots, I will send to Kevin Rayhil to true the action and recrown, and be content to shoot and learn the wind. I know that the 12 twist will work great for varmints, but will the lighter bullets be better to 300 yards than the 105-107's in the 8 twist. Which will be more accurate at 300 yards? p.s. I know it isn't a "true" benchrest gun

The heavier 105-108 grain bullets will have a higher BC and will do better in the wind. I am not real sure what the difference in MOA at 300 yards with 105 verse 80 grain bullet. You can run it on the JBM calculator to get an idea. If running the bigger bullets get the 8 twist. If shooting the lighter bullets get the 12 twist. I like the 8 twist. My 6br is an 8 twist and it shoot the 105 vld real well. I shoot mine in 600 yard f-class so the wind is more of an issue for me at that range.

If you are definitely sticking to 300yd max, I'd say go for the 1-12". If you're ever even remotely likely to shoot at 500/600yd go for the 1-8" as that gives more flexibility.

There is little difference in wind drift between an 80gn Berger at 3,100 fps or a 105gn VLD at 2,900 fps at 300yd. The VLD moves just over half an inch less in a 10 mph crosswind. Against that the 1-12" is optimised for top accuracy with the very good light match and BR bullets.

If your range is subject to really fierce weather and strong gusting winds though, you might be better off with the 1-8" barrel and 105gn bullets, trading a little grouping ability for less wind effect. (Another trick irrespective of load is to learn to shoot really fast to get the five shots off before the wind changes.)

Have a look at the 6BR information section if you haven't already done so. the FAQ covers which twist? and there is lots of really valuable information on loads and bullets.

While Varget is a top performer with the heavier (95-107gn) bullets, faster burners are better with 66-80gn pills in the slow-twist barrel. Viht N135 is described as outstanding with 80gn Bergers in this section's load data. The new IMR-8208 XBR may prove to be a winner too in this application.

moorepower,

For the ranges you will be shooting the 12tw with benchrest bullets from 68 to 80gr would be the best for what you will be shooting. I shoot this combo for Egg shoot matches out to 500 yds.

I've just finished load development for my 1/13 6BR using 68 grain Precision Ballistics BTs at 200 yards. I shot a .1955" on my last group. I was pretty happy with that, figuring that I did ok getting the 1/13 barrel with the no turn (.272") chambering. I had previously shot a 1/10 which never did well for me at 100 or 200 yards no matter what weight bullet I tried.

The other two 5 shot groups I tried with 30.5 grains of N-135 were in that .1955" neighborhood also. Rem 7-1/2 primers, Norma brass.
