What traits of a range make one side better?

It has seemed to me that a let up can catch the whole line, on basically the same shot, even though they may be hundreds of feet apart from each other.

On the other hand, a build can be watched making its way across the line, for 40 seconds or more, raising one flag after another, as at the Connaught Ranges with its many lines of flags down range.

I’m not certain why there is not more symmetry in the two, if this is right.
Increasing wind is a much slower progression, adding energy. Think of a heavy big rig truck going up a steep grade. It takes a lot more to go faster than it does for it to slow down.

I saw a dramatic example of this last week. I was shooting my Diana 54 in .22 at 100 yds. The 15.98 grain pellet , powder by a spring, starts out at 760 fps. I was shooting at a PGC range 100 yards long. The right side was a natural very steep ridges maybe 150 ft high. The left side of the range is a made made dirt wall 10 ft high and the backstop is double that high. Range is about 50ft wide. The first 10 yds from the benches is open to the start of that left hand wall . That left area is a field maybe 1000 yds across. The wind was hitting my left shoulder sitting at the bench in the 10 to 12 mph range. Ok, left to right wind. At 100 yards my pellets hit 4 to 6 inches left of my aiming point. I will take windflags next time, it will be interesting. It really pointed out to me how barriers really change things to a big degree .

For sure, range topography can make a big difference. At Van Dyne, Wi. there's a train track that parallels the range on the right side beyond a barrier of trees. They call a cease fire if a train is coming during a relay...you can see the reticle shake on target when the train passes.

It's good to keep in mind that even with wind flags, we don't see everything that's out there. On cool mornings at Webster City Iowa with light conditions, there's a pretty good amount of what I term 'turn over' as the air above the ground warms and tumbles. You can sometimes catch it on the mirage boards...and sometimes not. A pinwheeled 'X' on the sighter or a couple of record targets can turn into a fat '9' pretty fast.

The hypotheis' sometimes run counter to the theories. And both can be different from the facts. But the facts are that when the 'Commence Fire' is given and the clock starts running, all you've got is what's in front of you (and on the sides).

Good shootin' :) -Al
