What to do?

Evening fella's, been kicking this around for a few weeks and I'm stumped sorta! I fixed a old Winchester 670 30-06 together several years ago as I was going to go Elk hunting and wanted something pretty and classy to take along so I put more into it than it'll ever be worth cause well it was mine lol it WILL NOT shoot bullets lighter than the 175/180gr bullets but shoots them rather well only problem is since the Elk hunt never happened there's just not much around that I'm that mad at that I need to break out the 06 to shoot....... Buicks aren't as big as they used to be :-)

Thinking about just putting a new tube on it so I can actually put it to use but I'm an over thinker and just end up loosing sleep so thought I'd get your thoughts on a decent caliber that might catch my interest to rechamber it too? I have a mess of 284 Win. stuff that I found and peeked my interest but really don't want to mess with feed lips just in case..... I've never seen one that needed help but with my luck I'm your guy! little brother said I should try a 260 and just throat it a big longer, 6 Rem came to mind but finding brass looks to be an issue. Have a mess of 7 WSM brass as well but sure don't need anything magnum as my big deer rifle is a 6 Grendel.

I've come to the conclusion I can't make up my mind as I really have most everything covered for usable calibers and can't think of something I just need BUT with all the work I've put into this rifle I'd sure like to show it off at the range from time to time just don't feel like dealing with the recoil. Thanks for your opinions and for putting up with my bit of venting gibber!

There is nothing wrong with shooting 175-180 grain bullets on deer. That said, I am sure that there are some 150-168 grain bullet/powder/seating combos that will shoot well out of your rifle.

You can put a brake on it. We boomers couldn't figure out to how to take ear protection out into the woods, but the early millennials did. It goes without saying that we boomers are way tougher, but the millennials do have a good idea........

Also, never take apart a good shooting rifle, and NEVER choose a 7mm over a 30 cal......

Man, that’s purdy! 284 or 280ai…that’d be my tough choice.

Though with the way you talk a 25-06 might be more appropriate.

I would do a 260AI, Lapua brass available. A 6.5 Swed AI, again Lapua brass available or a 6.5-06AI or 6.5 Sherman, based off of 06/ 280 case. You shouldn't have feeding problems with any of these plus there is a great selection of bullets and can still be used for elk if need be.

Nothing wrong with 30-06 for deer.my friend shoots Muntjac and Roe with his which are a relatively small deer and surprisingly minimal carcase damage.i fitted him a sound moderator and it tames the recoil nicely..maybe you could fit a sound moderator to yours.just a thought.i wouldn't be without one.

6.5-06 would be my choice. I have several and everyone of them is a dang fine shooter.
Lots of bullets to pick from and recoil is manageable.

That's a fine looking rifle and I wouldn't change a thing. One of my favorite loads in my 30-06 is a 180 grain Partition. It works on everything from coyotes to elk.

I'll second INTJ's opinion of "never take apart a good shooting rifle".

Can't argue about taking a good shooting rifle apart! took a damn mess of work to get it to shoot as well as it does...... thing was a mess when I first got it.

I originally bought the rifle to build a 280 Rem BUT I started playing and well here we are, I guess you could say I'm pretty good at bad decisions lol

I contemplated a break or even using one of my suppressors but there's a problem as I like the 5/8-24 threads there is just not enough meat on the barrel dia. to cut threads and while I could go 9/16-32 APA my go to break don't offer those threads, yes I could change breaks but damn those APA work wonderfully!

Thanks for the kind words on the rifle! that stock I've got as much cash in as the rifle is worth in the real world lol BUT now I know I can do the work ;-)

Some reduced H4895 loads with 125 Sierra’s sound in order to me.
Beautiful Rifle!
I tried! I have 3 bullets brands I try and tried 125, 150, 165 and no love! I had given up until a buddy wanted to shoot it and all he had was some Remington Core-loc 180's and he put 3 into a beer cap size circle so I saved some headache and went that direction.

Thanks for the compliment! I tried.

I had a 25-06 for 3 years but ended up going back to a 243, nothing wrong with the round it just never gave me a warm fuzzy BUT I'm sort of a 6mm fan boy lol

Just rebarrel to a 6mm Rem. A 100 pieces of brass will likely last for as long as the barrel, or if it doesn't it will give you time to find another 100 rounds. Since the 6 Rem uses a 57 mm long case it will likely feed without any issues.
