What to do with worn out barrel?

What do you guys do with your worn out barrel? The throat in my .17 Rem. is gone. When I tried to check the seating depth the bullet seemed to fall into the bore about a half inch and groups are opening up way to much for accuracy anymore. I will be replacing this barrel with a 20 practical soon but was wondering what you guys do with old worn out barrel? :-\

Thanks hogpatrol...Guess I could try as long as I let who ever wants it know that it's "shot out" other wise it will make a heck of a paper weight... ;D

If your a machinest never over look the fact that it's a good source of steel for projects you can think up later. Bushings come to mind firstly.

Or have rechambered at the same time for a fireform barrel if it would help you.Otherwise I make stainless pillars out of old barrels and escutcheons etc.

Someone may be interested in it to learn barrel chambering............

You have to practice / learn on something.....

It is a standard 1 in 10 twist and thank you guys for all the ideas! phil ...it's got to be a coincidence but yesterday a buddy of mine was telling me about a young man getting interested in gunsmith field and is going to see if he could do something with the barrel. Guess we will see what happens soon. ;)

Any idea what a shot-out 26" stainless Savage .223 barrel, 1/9 twist, might be worth? I'm rebarreling my single-shot Model 12 VLP Varmint & will have one available soon.

Use for Fire Forming for like chambered barrel
Rechamber if not fire cracked
Contender shooters shorten and rechamber them
Use for tooling and other machined projects
(I'm making a bullet comparator out of small
section of one)
Sell to another Smith for their projects
Sell to new Smith to practice on
Sell to old Smith to practice on
The possibilities are endless.....

I heated one up with a torch, bent it into a U shape, welded it to a base and gave it away in a match as a last place bent barrel award.

Pillars, lapping bars, arbors for dialing in oddball actions, form dies.....

I don't keep all of my barrels, but there is always a couple on the bottom shelf.
