What Scope?

Started shooting long range with a CZ 455 in a homemade benchrest stock. It shoots great with .27" average group. The only problem is I ran out of elevation on a 6x20 Nikon scope. What's the answer to my problem, shims which I'm not to excited about or a new scope. Thanks for any advice.

SWFA

Welcome to long-range rimfire. We all use SWFA with up to 50 moa mounts but what do you consider long-range?

.27" is pretty small, what distance are you getting this at? If you're near Eastern Ohio you'd be welcome to shoot at one of our three local long-range rimfire ranges.

The .27" group was at 50 yards. 50 MOA would do it. The guy organizing this is planning on shooting 200 yards. Shot Sunday at his place at different distances and ran out of elevation around 90 yards where I had to guess at holdover. I did not believe the 22 LR cartridge was as accurate as it is. Of course there was no wind to speak of and I shot off my benchrest equipment. My shooter likes Federal Ultra Match ammo which is $18.00 a box. My CZ has integral 3/8" dovetail groves for mounting the rings. Do they make 20-30 MOA rings. Is SWFA a brand of scope? you mentioned 50 MOA rings, where can I get these? Thanks for all the Info
I did a ballistic program run and it looks like I need 28 MOA at 200 yards +/-.

Nothing wrong with lapping, shimming and bedding the scope rings. I do it on all of my serious rifles to get the zero range I want without using up any elevation. The bedding gives you 100% scope to ring contact as well.

Takes me about 30 minutes to lap, clean, get release agent on the scope, shim, and bed with JB Weld. Then I just trim the excess off nice and neat after I break it out the next day.

DIP makes a 25 moa mount that converts your 11mm to picatinny mount. https://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1190048&CAT=4268

We use SWFA 16x and 20x fixed power scopes. They have 120 moa or more of travel. Some of mine have the older mismatched reticle/turrets but they also have the mil-quad (mil/mil matched) and just released moa/moa reticle. Was on sale with nice rings and a bubble in the mid $200 price range. Excellent mechanics and decent glass although the 20x model is really critical with the eye relief.

This should let you dial out past 300 yards. I make the 50 moa mounts for my guns cause we like to stretch it out even farther.

We're always looking for others in our area to come try out the longer distances with their rimfires.

SWFA 16x older model with mismatched moa/mil turret/reticle but functions great. This has a 40moa mount with some additions to let me hang a bi-pod off it. Always wanted a long range rimfire revolver to just see what I could make it do. Just have to do some calculations on what you see for a hit/miss and how you calculate your adjustment. Not a big deal but some might struggle with it.

SWFA 5-20 HD on a Win 52-C with a 50moa mount. It now has a SWFA 16X mil-quad.

SWFA 16X on a Anschutz Super Match with 50moa mount. It now sports a mil-quad also.

If they didn't work and work well I'd not be using them but you can see they are on all of my rimfires. I'm slowly upgrading all to the mil-quad model since it has a bit thinner reticle which works better on some of the really small targets we have at the matches. I do like the thicker older mismatched reticle for some shooting conditions though, it does stand out better but may obscure a couple of the itty bitty targets.

Good luck, hope this helps some but there are other options out there that will work. Just be careful, some scopes don't have enough internal travel to take advantage of an extra 25moa of travel. The other nice thing about the SWFA fixed power scopes is they will focus down to well under 25 yards and out to infinity with the paralax adjustment.

You can take what Topstrap posts to the bank,
he is one of the few that stretches the range on RF long range shooting,
out to 500yds+ using pistols/rifles, he knows how to do it.

Tia,
Don

Ha, not really Don. Lots of others shooting farther now. Just have to get last the idea it can't be done and start doing it. Right equipment makes it pretty darn easy. Am still amazed we can't get more to come try our matches.

I've never tried a sightron yet. Once we tried the SWFA just kinda stuck with them we have had great luck with the 5-20 HD on our 1000 yard guns.

Let us know what you get, how it works and how you do at the next match.

My experience is that it is a craps shoot with various CZ models. I have 452 UL that shoots a whole lot better than my 452 Thumbhole Varmint with a bull barrel. I have shot a lot more than the two I currently own.

CZ's will GENERALLY benefit from a properly done pillaring and bedding job no matter which model.

Triggers- Ace Hardware and Fastenal both have springs suitable for the CZ's for under a dollar that will get you to between 10 and 14 oz. pull. There is also a "YoDave" kit available on e-bay that will bring you down to near the same range. If this is permitted, take a look at the CZ section stickies and searches at rimfirecentral.
