What reticle for short range?

I am in the market for another scope for a gun that will be finished soon. It will mostly be used for paper only at 100-400 yard with most of that a 100. I have a Nightforce on another rifle with the MLR reticle and feel something else with only paper in mind may be better. I was thinking of getting one of the discontinued 12-42 NXS but not many reticles to choose from. Not sure if the dot is too big on a NP2-DD and that and a few NPR2's are about all that's left.

I'm thinking a very fine crosshair may be best. Not opposed to Sightron, March or other but wanted to get some opinions on the type reticle people like for shorter distances.

I love the 1/8th minute dot but for longer range a 1/4 minute dot might be better,it is your chuice and I have alot of scopes with 1/8 and love them.
