What rear bag spacing should I get for this...?

This is a Savage FClass stock.

What spacing should I specify when ordering a rear bag?

I am very interested in the SEB rear bag with MicroFiber.

Thank You

What is the width of the flat on the botto of the stock? I like an ear spacing 1/8'' narrower than the width of the flat.
Oh, I see it now, I would have gone with a .800''. If you go wider than the stock, how will you get good support?

I agree with zfast! With time the bag will stretch a little and the flat will settle. If you go oversize, your only option will probably be overpacking the ears to make up for any stretch. Also, if it's tighter you can always pound on the butt to get it settled!

Send that photo to who ever you have make the bag. They will size it for you. It will be narrower that the bottom of you stock. Later! Frank

Do you want it to ride in the ears or on the space between the ears. I like to ride on the ears, so I would go 3/4" or whatever they have close to that but less than the width of the bottom of the stock. I'm not sure that 1/2" wouldn't work.

I did have a Savage F Class stock and it seems that it measured over an inch, maybe a 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 behind the grip on the flat bottom and it was tapered all the way to about .850" at the rear of the stock as you show in your picture. Is yours that way or .850" wide the length of the entire bottom. It seems to me it was difficult getting a bag to fit it correctly because of the taper.

Agree with this. I have the F/ TR and I am using a 3/8 spacing.

I have two Savage F-Class rifles. One's stock is butchered to behave correctly on a bag and the other is factory, as described by Snakepit. No factory Savage F-Class stock will ever ride a rear bag correctly because the width tapers sharply.

I always wondered why they designed the F-Class stock with that taper in it. Does anyone have any idea why? My Savage F/TR does not have the taper and I thought I saw a Savage Benchrest model that did not have the taper.

You sure your F/TR doesn't taper from wider at back to thinner in front?

You are correct my F/TR did have the taper but like Steve Blair said in his post above I modified it like he did to his F-Class and took the taper out of it. I did not take the taper out of my F-Class stock. Good catch.

Here are the two F-Class stocks I have. One was butchered to be an F-TR rifle, the other is stock with a .22-250 barrel for varmints.

Steve, does Erik Cortina know you own two Savages?!?!? ;)

Yes, and even though he probably won't admit it, the one set up for F-TR shot a better 900 yard score than his, or any, F-Open rifle in the 2010 AZ Palma. That's actually when I met Erik. He likely figured if I could make that sorry thing shoot, I must know what I'm doing. ;)

The modified stock looks pretty good to me. I think the term butchered might be a little harsh.

Well, a Home Depot rattle can covers a lot of sins. Here's a side view and forend underside. I cut the wings off the forend on the band saw, cut the stock in the rear for the bag, reshaped the grip and added a short rail section to mount the bipod. After all that, sanded, primed and painted it yellow. My younger daughter said it was the ugliest thing she ever saw. :o [br]
I told her she wasn't shooting it and had no say in the matter. ;)

I am impressed with what you did to that stock, I even like the color. I down loaded the pictures for future reference.

We will have to call it the "Banana Rifle" and you "Top Banana".

It has been modified and is .850 wide the length of the entire bottom (or at least pretty close).
