What primers do you fella's use in competition?

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I am just taking a survey as around my parts the only thing I find easily is the Remington 7 1/2 match primers. Cant find any federals. I don't want to buy primers online because the hazmat and heavy shipping charge's kills the deal. I usually buy 2 to 3 bricks. I really want to know what the actual competitors prefer and could you get by with what I have.

In large rifle I use either wolf of Fed 210M
Small rifle I've had very good luck with Rem 7 1/2, CCI 450 And BR-4

I made the complete switch from fed 205 to now only using 7 1/2. Easier to get locally and better groups. Heck I still have brass with fed primers just sitting in a tote.
For large rifle I have been using strictly wolf primers, I have tried others but keep going back to them.

JR600, you must have read my mind! You stated EXACTLY what I was thinking! Great minds think alike! LOL!!!

I got some Tulammo LR from a National competitor, actually a former National Champion. Shootsdots, have you ever tried these? I've always been a CCI man.

All my Dasher's I use CCI 450's.... BR-4's and 205 GMM in my other small primer rifles. Large rifle mostly Fed. 210 GMM, followed by some Wolf primers.

I was stuck on Fed. 205 GMM primers for a long time in anything that took a small rifle primer. Had a .223AI built for GH matches and after over 100 rounds could not get it to shoot with 4 different powders and various seating depths. Did a primer swap to BR-4's due to a hunch after reading some threads on here and man did that thing ever wake up!

Yes, the Wolf primers ARE the Tulas.. They are excellent!

You have to hit the Wolf/Tula hard and they have to be bottomed out.
Not the best for fire forming brass where you may not have a shoulder and are depending on long seated bullets to hold the case back against the bolt face.
Ben found this out the hard way. I think he's still blaming the primers though.
Meet those simple conditions and you won't find a more consistent primer.

Wes, I had 1 / 100 pack that were bad. They had misfires after they were formed too. I also have a couple of thousand Wolf S/R and S/RM's that on almost EVERY shot I get a "Tink--BOOM"! Then with some I get "Tink" recock "Tink-BOOM"! It does not matter whether they are the Mags or the standard. I do NOT have that problem with the L/R's.. They are excellent and mimic Fed 210GM's almost spot on!

After trying Winchester LR in my .308 and getting lousy accuracy I changed to CCI BR2 and found they work fine so I haven't changed. I hear the standard CCI is just as good and have 5000 Tula SR however haven't tried their LR yet.
I have ordered all my primers on line for the last several years because local suppliers ran out or limited us to 100 at a time with high prices so when I get down to a couple thousand I get on line and order at least 5000 at a time. I usually order powder at the same time to average the price of hazmat over more supplies but we have no local retailers that handle large quantities of bullets, powder and primers. I could drive to Powder Valley but it's a 2 1/2 hour drive and it's just cheaper to pay the hazmat.

Based on local primer costs versus online, I found I could buy 2 "bricks" of CCI BR-x primers and the cost savings offset the hazmat fee. Add on a jug of powder and again, the savings there more than offset the shipping cost (as the primers and powder were shipped in the same case).

As for primers I use, when my CCI's are gone I'm switching totally to Tula. Prices are great, performance is every bit as good as Fed's and CCI's with only minor adjustments in charge weight needed.

Don't let the Hazmat and shipping charges scare you off. Just plan out your needs a little farther into the future and buy one shipment that will cover it.

I order large enough quantities for my shooting that the hazmat/shipping amount to around $0.50 per "unit" (pound of powder or box of primers).

Unfortunately my local dealers price their reloading product so it can fund their annual Hawaiian vacation.

Some of the local prices are crazy however I have an account at a local dist to avoid the even higher prices from mom and pop places. The problem is they only have certain primers and none are match primers.

Good news for me ,I went to my local wholesaler and they had a brick of BR-4's. That is a start but no powder right now.

I've been using Wolf LRs lately - the last batch I loaded up had one primer missing the anvil portion, so it's worth sanity checking as you open each sleeve of 100..no problems shooting, however.

I use which ever primer gives the best accuracy. Loads are like women, some like things a little different than others for the best bang.

My primer test today confirmed that the CCI primers .gave the biggest ES18 FPS. Federal 205M 12 FPS
Wolf and the Tula had 8 FPS. 10 shots each with complete barrel cleaning and 2 shots to start.

What other gun is their. One was a bat and the other a Savage.
Savage had the small 5 FPS ES with tula. first time we tried them. Larry

I stocked up on Tula and Wolf SR primers when primers were really tough to find (though as you state - Federals still are). I have been so happy with them, I have bought more and have been using them as my main primers for a few years now. I get a buddy or two and buy 25,000 at a time. That makes the hAZMAT just over a buck per thousand primers, and a couple bucks less than CCI's. I still have my Federal Match on the shelf - but for no valid reason now. You will have no more issues with them than any other primer unless you have excessive headspace with your ammo or if you over-deepen your primer pockets when leveling them. They do need to have a solid strike from the firing pin at, or beyond, a minimum depth.
