What Powder for a SMK 69gr HPBT?

Hi Guys,

I am pretty new to reloading and have just picked up some SMK 69gr HPBT's.

I am running an AR with a WOA 18" SPR 223 Wylde barrel with a 1:8 twist.

I have a selection of powder and was wondering what you guys think the most suitable powder would be from the below list.

Ramshot TAC
Ramshot X-Terminator
IMR 4320
BLC(2)
H335
H322

Thanks

You probably got it made anyway you go. Most of my loads were with RL15, IMR4064, Varget. In my experience that is one of the easiest bullets out there to get to perform provided the platform is correct and you keep your ducks in a row,

All of the powders that you listed will work, some better than others.

Ramshot TAC- Good powder for the 69, a bit more temperature sensitive than an extruded powder but that can be calculated.

Ramshot X-Terminator - No experience

IMR 4320- I have quite a bit of this but have never tried it in 223. It has been said that it is close to Varget and RL15 which are very popular with the 69 SMK

BLC(2) No experience

H335 Good powder but a little fast for the 69.

H322- Excellent extruded powder. I'm currently running a surplus ball powder with a similar burn rate behind a 69 and it is performing really well. It won't give you the highest velocities but is very consistent. There is a node around 23 grains that is working well for guys that are using it.

I load TAC for AR simply because it flows like water through a powder thrower... I load mostly 55gr with it but it shines with the 69gr SMK... You can get some serious speed with TAC but be sure to follow book date and start low and work up.... Some of their load data which you can download for free from their website is pretty hot for 5.56 in my opinion and towards the extreme upper end I think I would use new brass..

Is TAC a great powder I would say no but it's a great all around powder , there are of course better powders just like any thing else... I find that in an iron sighted m4 being older and having old people eyes the accuracy downfall is me so I am not to concerned about wringing out every bit of accuracy out of a 16 inch barrel that wasn't designed for it.... Which is another reason I use TAC in the AR platform.... Unfortunately right now you use what you can get though... Testing will give you the answer....
