What powder for a 308?

Been prepping brass.. get my 308 barrel in tomorrow.. it finished out at 22 inches. Laua brass, 155 berger...

varget, re15? Any others that have great success i need to look into before i start trying to develop a load?

I know vargets always been a big 308 powder... got some i dont use for anything else anyways..

just looking for starting opinions from yall f class 308 gurus that know more about it than me...

I have tried quite a few in my shooting days and some of the best results were with h335,BLC-2, imr 4064, 8208 was pretty good. The tightest groups I shot in an m1a were with pull down blc-2 however if it gets really hot out you have to drop the charge about a grain to stop over pressure. This was in a match rifle. I shot groups that were less than .250 moa that day of competition. It was awesome and I was using hornady 168 grain match with Remington 7 1/2 primers with the pull down blc-2. I hope this gives you ideas and good accuracy like I had using ball powder.

+1. If not available then IMR-4064 is a great powder and best of all, I's on the shelf in more places to day than many others.

Varget and RL15 work great if you have them. I believe Varget to be the choice of most FTR competitors. Might be wrong, but most I know use Varget. Good case fill and temp stability, accurate as well.

IMR data says 41gr to 45gr on their website... what's the best starting point you reckon? any secret grain weight range that seems to hold true for most?

In Australia we tend to use a lot of AR2206h which is marketed as H4895 in the US. A good powder and better than Varget (AR2208 here) for 155gn match projectiles. H4895 is a bit cleaner than Varget. 8208 is a bit fast for that weight in our hot climate and can pressure spike with warmish loads.

From our line AR-Comp(TM) is one to consider (aside from the obvious Reloder(R) 15)
If you prefer spherical powders for progressive reloading, Varmint from our Power Pro(TM) line is also in that burn speed range.
Shoot well,
Paul
