Regardless of how small I shoot, or how surprisingly crappy the weather sometimes can be out there despite the predictions, I always come home feeling recharged in a way that I don’t when I go to a range or a match. Maybe that’s the introvert in me.For those who enjoy having long range shooting locations out away from everyone, do you miss the pleasure of the BS that takes place at a club?
We have a lot of that here, BS that is.
Honestly, I do enjoy it and it gives me an opportunity to learn from others.
Having the open space to shoot I'm sure has it's advantages too, like getting true wind flag readings and not dealing with turbulent wind from the various posts and bullet deflectors necessery in the city.
Well said Evan!Regardless of how small I shoot, or how surprisingly crappy the weather sometimes can be out there despite the predictions, I always come home feeling recharged in a way that I don’t when I go to a range or a match. Maybe that’s the introvert in me.
I grew up shooting with my grandpa, dad, and uncle. When I’m out there alone with my thoughts, I frequently find myself remembering them and how they coached me through breathing and calming myself to make each shot. I think about how we would sit in the reloading room and they taught me each step. I was just six when they taught me to shoot and maybe only a little older for reloading. I have many warm memories that feel like they have hardly faded in the time since. My son just barely turned 3, but I plan to take him out there and teach him the same. I think creating those strong associations and memories around firearms are the best way to ensure a respectful and safe relationship with them throughout life.
Hilly areas. You need a hillside backup for safety.Personally I prefer flat open areas. Such as an empty cow pasture
good point mate. very smart thinking.Hilly areas. You need a hillside backup for safety.
I miss Ben Avery Shooting Facility. I have been living in Texas (a little drive east of Austin) for 10-years and Texas has nothing close to Ben Avery's.I'm fortunate enough to have a pasture down on the creek bottoms where I can shoot at 1000yds, which has given me a lot of opportunities to carry out load development. In fact, unless I'm shooting the 22RF rifles, I very seldom shoot under 600yds. I've had friends up to shoot there with me plenty of times, which makes it more enjoyable. But my favorite places to shoot are during matches at CRC near Byers, Co., Whittington Center at Raton, and Ben Avery just NW of Phoenix.
I too miss Ben Avery. I moved to Ohio chasing a job. I was in Phoenix last October and scheduled the trip to shoot a match. I was reminded of how much I enjoyed being there.I miss Ben Avery Shooting Facility.
