What is your favorite AR-10 7.62 Load?

I am getting ready to start loading for an AR-10 and realize as it is a gas system different powders come into play. I am shooting a Noveske with a 20 inch barrel. Not sure of twist rate which someone here might know...anyone that has any input, will be greatly appreciated.....

Twist should be visible on the barrel somewhere. Look near the compensator/flash suppressor/muzzle. If you can't find it, it's pretty easy to measure with a cleaning rod and tight fitting brush or patch.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I was thinking 4895 for a powder. I could not get Federal Gold Medal Match 168 to shoot well out of the gun, but 147 gr German Dag NATO was drilling it... so I figured it must be a powder issue. I forgot to Cl twist before doing post..

Baer45,

41.5 of VV N-140 with CCI 7.62 primers pushing Hornady 178 ELDs works well out of my 20" DD upper. Might get iffy @ 1k, but very low vertical in my testing to 600.

I shot 1000's of reloads out of semi auto rifles never used small base dies. I have seen tight chambered match rifles where some have needed small base dies

We do have a Krieger barrel on our DPMS AR-10. Absolutely requires small base dies. We learned that the hard way! (Had to pull bullet and powder for 100s of rounds to resize) YMMV

Thanks all the info. I have a good adjustable gas block. It appears H4895 might be a powder fora gas system in addition to those mentioned in post. Zeidickers (sp) has some helpful info. Slower powders like imr 4064? Might work well, but why beat up the gun? 1:10 twist

that is horrible. I hate to say it when I load for any semi I check to see if it chambers. don't you have another 308 to use those rounds in? that is a lot of work taking them apart

Beat me to it. Same load I use in my M1A and AR-10. Great combo.

Yeah. It's a guaranteed to work well type of load. I switched to a different powder because for semi autos I prefer loading on my Dillon xl650 and stick powders don't meter as well as ball.
So now I use 42.5 or 43.3 gr of w-748 with 168 or 165 gr bullets. It's a load that works great is all rifles, semi auto and bolt.

Not to conflict what’s been said about M1A loads, they totally work. But an AR10/308 is really much stronger than a M1A, and can handle hotter loads as long as your firing pin hole and buffer/ spring are up to it. My 168 load is only 42g of 4064, but I am also shooting 44g of Varget with a 185 Berger at 1000. My rifle was a obyermeyer chamber that I had throated.

I was get around 2650 with 43 gr under 175 smk in 18.5 inch Bartlein barrel on Desrt tech with mill brass reloads...seemed to function fine...although 4064 will work in AR 10 I think it is too rough for long term use so I usually load 4895...w/168

Bamban is telling the truth here. Those Berger 168 bullets fly very well. It’s not like a 168 Sierra SMK at all. It’s a long range bullet.
