What is your experience with 21'st Century neck turning carbide cutter life?

Just curious what your experience has been?

Carbide cutter, easy to cut material, slow speed, light cut, I would expect the life to almost indefinite. But what has you found?

I use the Sinclair solid carbide primer pocket uniforming cutter. On the small rifle/pistol cutter I know I have cut way north of 10K cases, and the cutter is still cutting just fine. More severe duty than the neck turning cutter I would think.

Call John and ask him, if anyone would know he probably does. I gave his turner away so I can’t answer but I’ve turned thousands of necks with my pma and Sinclair’s, use plenty of lube and turn slow it will last a long long time. When changing them out don’t drop them or bang it around and it will probably outlast you.

As long as the cutter is kept clean and is not dropped or nicked they should last a very long time. Thousands if not tens of thousands of pieces of brass if not more.

Have old Marquart high speed steel neck turning tool that has to be approaching 40 years old, with a lot of use and is still cutting fine. If it ever dulls, it will be easy to re sharpen, on a grinder. To me, carbide tooling for brass is a problem looking for an answer, with out considering carbide's higher cutting pressures, or chipping if dropped.
