What is the 30x47

The 30x47 is a shortened 308W. In it's original form the shoulder was pushed back and the brass shortened to 47mm. It was also known as the 30 x 1.850". The more modern version has a longer neck and 30 degree shoulder. It is called the 30x47 HBR since it is primarily a Hunter Bench Rest cartridge. With match grade bullets in a Hunter Class rifle it is extremely accurate. Most shooters prefer premium brass such as Lapua although just about any good quality brass with the 308W case head can, and has been, used.

is this cartridge a candidate for a XTC match rifle. I currently use a std. 308win now. can this cartridge be effective out to 600yds and if so what weight bullets do you use and what twist barrel? thanks gents

Well, people have considered the 30x47 a 100-300m cartridge, but guess what, somebody has apparently just set a new world record at 600 yards with an even shorter version, the 30BR:

Randy Robinette reported on Stan Ware's board that: "a 30 BR Disciple, one Gene Solyntjes [possibly broke] two NBRSA 600 Yd.,Heavy Gun) records over the weekend--one for group and one for score!

It seems that Mr. Solyntjes piloted his PacNor barreled,1:18" twist) 30BR, launching 118 Gr. bullets, via a charge weight of 34.5 Gr./ H-4198, to a very nice 10-shot group measureing 2.28",aproximately .38 MOA) . . . and ALL in the X-ring, establishing, we assume - the first ever 10-X match score!"

So, despite the low BC of these bullets, there could be some potential in the 30x47 and 30BR for longer distances. I know Randy Robinette thinks it will work at 600.

I believe you are talking about two different calibers the 30x47 described above based on the 308 Win,Large Rifle Primer) and the 30BR based on the BR case,Small Rifle Primer).

Dan,
Yes you're right. Thanks for your clarification! Two different cartridges entirely. Sorry to muddy the waters with the news post about the new 600-yard record. I guess what I was trying to say was that short 30s,both 30x47 and 30BR) have been considered short-range calibers, but some folks have been using them with great success at medium distances.

I am new to the 30X47 HBR been shooting it 2weeks
