What is going on, with my 223AI

Shooting some Sako ammo, with 50 gr. SP, my 10 shot groups are 15 mm. high, but they are 65 - 70 mm. wide/100 m.

Speed is around 960 - 980 ms.

I tried to add some speed, by more powder - up to 1050 ms., and it gets better, but first beginning to get better around max. load.

Twist rate is 14 "

Why are my groups wide - anny ideas ???

Regards AB

It is a Tikka M55 with original factory heavy barrel, and it is free floated, but there is no bedding in theese rifles, and they usuallly shoot grate, right out og the box.

I just never seen a rifle make wide groups like that - there must be something not right !!!

Hello AB,

My suggestion to you is to try all the basic checks:
Is the scope mounting system tight, no loose fasteners?
Is the rifle securely attached to the stock, meaning all screws tightened properly at the right torque?
Have you checked if the barrel is truly floated, by slipping a business card under the barrel, between the stock all the way to the receiver?
Can you verify that the crown of the barrel has not been damaged?

Usually, a horizontal grouping might mean flinching and/or anticipation from the shooter. You might get one of your friends, a good shooter try it out to see if the problem follows the rifle.

Another possibility is as follows: the scope might be damaged. Try the box test:
Always pointing the scope at the center of the target, dot or diamond, bring scope adjustment up 10 cm, left 10 cm. Shoot as if trying to get the best group possible, with 3 rounds.
Adjust right 20 cm, then shoot again as said above.
Adjust down 20 cm, then shoot again as said above.
Adjust left 20 cm, then shoot again as said above, and
Adjust up 10 cm, right 10 cm, then shoot again as said above.

If the scope is good, you should end up where you were pointing at.

Hope this long-winded explanation helps, let us know.

2 things can cause horizontal, varing cheek pressure on the stock and varying palm pressure with the right hand, these set up the stock to recoil away from the pressure and thus groups widen,

Thanks - this gives me something to work with - I always take another rifle with me, when I have problems, so that I know it isen´t me - making the problems.

No wind flags - 3 / 10 shot groups, was shot indoors.

All the basics are ok, i can´t find annything wrong with the basics of the rifle (or the shooter - ho ho)

It is a verry significant problem, but i really never seen annything like this.
