what is best caliber for 300 yard best edge shooting

6 BR or Dasher with the 80 Gr Berger, as mentioned above, or the new 80 GR Bart Dominator. Both shoot very well..

Unless you are up against very high level competition and extremely serious, shoot a 223. In most of the Fclass I shoot it fares well against all competitors.

I shoot a lot of matches with a 300 yd target involved. If conditions are good I shoot a 6PPC. If its going to have wind over 5 mph or so I shoot a 6BRX with 106 gr. EPS bullets. I have won a lot of matches out to 500 yds with these 2 rifles.

300 yards isn't that far. A well tuned 222 or 223 would work well and cheap to shoot. more practice time and some more cash for a good scope.

Best edge? I would say something like this.

We shoot something similar. It’s a deal with no sighters allowed. No coaching. No wind flags.

The 30 BR does well till the wind gets tricky. Then the 6 BRs dominate. The guy that has won the points for the year all recent years shoots a 10 twist 6 BR, 90 grain Berger boat tail target, H4195.

FWIW.

What in the crap is 'best edge'???
That means that if your bullet hole is in Two scoring rings, you get the better of the two.

Worst edge is the opposite. If you are in two scoring areas, you get the worse of the two.

For the sake of discussion, let’s say that we’re shooting groundhog varmint outlines. Hit or miss scoring only. 10 points for a hit, zero for a miss.

Joe is shooting a 6mm and his bullet hole is just barely inside the edge of the outline. I mean that it’s got the faintest possible amount of daylight between the hole and the line marking the edge of the outline. Joe then gets full credit, 10 points, for that shot. Best or worst edge.

Now Bob shoots. He’s shooting a 308. The center of his bullet hole is *exactly* where Joe’s is. But, because his bore is 1.62mm larger, his hole nicks the inside line of the outline. Best edge, he gets his full 10 points. Worst edge, he gets zip.

Why not a .223 with a 1 in 8 twist. No recoil and a lot cheaper to shoot with very good accuracy. And with the heavier bullets, not bad at 1000. Like to hear some pros and cons on this because our club has the same shoot. Eggs at 300.
The .223 8 twist at 300 requires quite a bit more care in hold off and ability to observe the conditions with the 73 / 75 grain bullet and on the other hand the 6 Br. 8 twist is much more forgiving and a straighter shooter / tighter grouper with the 105 VLD and likely other 100 + grain bullets. That's my experience as I shoot both weekly in competition out to 300 yds and the 6 BR. out to 400 yds. at St. Thomas.
