What if you could..........

Ok, we're all suffering from missing Moderator shock, who's on a well deserved vacation). To bide the time till we have some new blogs and guns of the week to slaver over here's something to keep our searching minds occupied:

Suppose you were going to build a new 6BR, or any caliber for that matter, for competitions out to 600 yards. Money is no object. There are no restrictions in regard to weight, or anything else for that matter. What caliber and components would you choose? What action, barrel, stock, scope mounting system, scope, trigger, muzzle brake/ no brake, etc. etc. etc.

I'll get the ball rolling with a standard 6BR with a Bat MB action, McMillan Tooley MBR stock, or Robertson composite stock, they are pretty!), Jewell trigger, Kreiger straight taper 28 inch barrel, Harrells big a** brake, Davidson bases, Kelbly rings, Nightforce 12-42BR, finished weight 22-25 pounds. Estimated cost $4000 complete.

OK your turn!

Danny

Ok Danny here goes..

BAT Model M, Two Broughton 8 twist 5C 416R S.S. 1.25 x 30 with a 7.79 contour for a 6.5x284. One Broughton 6mm 8 twist same contour as the 6.5 for a 6br. Jewell 12oz . Mcmillan MBR red white and blue flame, with 3way adjustable buttplate and recoil pad. Nightforce 12 x 42 NSX with CH2 reticle. I would have Sid Goodling smith the rig.

Cost $4500

Couple questions...

Will a 1.250 contour work OK with the BAT Model M,1.125" threads)?

The counter bore on the BAT Model MB is 1.250" Seems to me any barrel much bigger than 1.200" would have < 0.025" I'm wondering if a tight clearance between the barrel and the counterbore, say < 0.02", might cause problems?

6XC or some improved version of the 6BR. Viper stainless action, drop port, right bolt, right bolt. Lilja 3 groove, 26-28 finished, #6-7 contour, no brake. McMillian hunter class BR stock painted by Kav. Nightforce or US Optics scope. Sierra or Berger 115s. Farley rest.

All I have is the barrel, scope, bullets and rest...

Danny,

I would do exactly as you did except I would ditch the brake and get a Shehane stock instead. I always use wood is weight is not an issue.

I'd also like to do a 30BR heavy varmint class. Bat action, Lilja barrel, Jewel trigger, and a Shehane stock. Probably a NF scope. I think I can keep it below 13.5 pounds.

Jason/Danny,
Please answer Longshot's question in the above post. Will a 1.25 bbl fit on a BAT Model M with a 1.25" x 16tpi. Will it cause any problems?,I sure hope not, I have the bbls waiting on the action)

Chuck

Chuck,

I honestly don't know. Since your waiting on a Bat can you give Bruce Thom a call and find out and let us know?

Danny

Brakes, brakes, love and hate! I threw that brake thing in just to stir the kettle, and stir it I did!

Is it Brake, or Break, I've seen it both ways.

Check out that Hickory Egg Shoot gun of the week. On a 25 pound 6BR no less. Just gets me wondering if there isn't some advantage that's all. You can't argue with success.

I will freely admit it, I HATE, yes capital HATE shooting beside one. Especially during a match where I can't move my stuff down ten benches. I'm the kind of undiplomatic guy that when the guy with his braked rifle shooting beside me blows half my stuff off my bench and ask's "I'm sorry, does it bother you?" I flat out tell him "hell yes it bothers me". That's about when diplomacy ends.

I personally think they ought to be outlawed or made to shoot a separate relay entirely, but that usually isn't possible.

I doubt if I'll put one on cause I prefer people to like me instead of smiling to my face then cursing me and that @##$$# brake behind my back.

Now all you brake guys are free to stomp on me if you like. After all turn abouts fair play> LOL!

Danny & Longshot,

Just called Bruce at BAT, he said that a 1.25 bbl would work fine on the Model M . Whew!!!!

Chuck

Chuck,

Glad to hear it. I thought so, but longshot had me thinking. It's always best to go right to the source and ask.
Sid Goodling is a good smith, I'm sure you'll be happy with his work.

Danny

As far as i know you can get any thread size you wanted up to 1-3/16, might get 1.062 instead if you want more meat at the shoulder.

I wouldnt personally like the 1/16" shoulder, but it WILL work...glad one of the Bruces at BAT cleared things up!

Chuck -- expecting pics when you get it together :D

I would start with a Panda RBLP and add a three groove Lilja 8 twist barrel. This would go into a Kelby Klub stock. Pillar bedded with a weight system added. I would add a Leupold Mark IV bumped up to 35X. Jewel trigger and Kelby rings.
It would be chambered for a 6BRX with a .272,no-turn) neck.
So waht do you think?

Action & Barrel: .50 BMG single shot, bolt action rifle. 36" Long barrel.

Sights: 20 MOA angled rail for scope. 30mm scope, or better yet, US Optics external adjust model.

Stock. Unknown.

Bullets: Unknown. Something short and blunt, flat based) for close in, and either A-MAX or turned solids for long range.

Other Accessories:
- Detachable suppressor for reducing recoil and muzzle blast signature. Far more effective at reducing recoil than any muzzle brake, and a lot quieter for the shooter.
- Some sort of precision traverse and elevation mechanism. For when I'd really want to see that it's not my hold causing errors.

Such a rifle is as large as practical for what I'd want to do,punch paper).

What an interesting question, with a lot of interseting rigs! I would start out using either a Hall, or Bat, action. I would use Satern cut rifled barrels in a #6, or #7, taper, and finished out to 28" long without the muzzle brakes. I would have three barrels. The first one would be 14" twist, chambered in .22BR, .252" NK, for varmint work. The second barrel would be a 6.5" twist barrel that would also be chambered with the same .22BR reamer, for long range target work. The third barrel would be a 12" twist barrel chambered in .243AI, for long range varmint work. The barrels would also have Answer Products Varmint/Sniper brakes installed, and the 6.5" twist barrel would be setup with a thread protector where rules would prohibit the use of brakes. I am a disabled shooter who is very recoil sensitive due to Polio. I have been recently informed that I have the beginning stages of Arhritis showing in my right, shooting shoulder. As one can see, the use of muzzle brakes can help keep a fellow shooter at the range shooting, instead of just wishing that he could be shooting. So, do not hate muzzle brakes without thinking about some of the positive uses for them, since there could be a day when you will need one yourself to keep shooting. When I shoot at the range with my braked barrels, I will always try to get as far away as possible from fellow shooters, and I will always let them know that I am shooting braked barrels as a courtesy to them. For a stock, I would use a Shehane Tracker. I would have an Accumajic Accurizer barrel tuner installed in the stock forearm for barrel tuning purposes. I like using the Leupold VX-III 8.5-25X50 LRT scopes. I hope that all of you enjoy reading about my "dream rifle".

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
