What I dont do for pals...coyote

After my pal has watched me shoot some 500+ coyote with my 6x45 & 6x6.8 builds he said build me a light weight AR15 6x45 for my night rig.
So I whipped the rig out, sighted it in w/my load, and took it out for a night hunt and as usual the RR kept him from going as they needed him to run a train.
I carried my own night rig along with his, the call, stool, sticks out last week.
Nothing like sounding like the Clampets carrying that stuff for a 1.5 mile loop, barrels clanging into each other, 5 fences to drop it all & cross over. Yea I was cussing at my self saying "your a nut ol man". I should of just took his rig, BUT my luck would be I run into coyotes and it fail on me (even though I have 500% confidence in it from the range time & my building)
Any way after 3 sets and sounding like a box full of metal working my way back to the truck I have a coyote pop out below me in a pasture looking for the kitten in distress I was playing.
Scanning w/my handheld thermal I bring his rig up & see it in his thermal scope right off the bat, line up and drop it at 204 yards, 55g nosler varmageddon. I cant cry now.
2 others stayed to far out on the second set above a gully system, got my scent as they both popped up down wind of me OR heard the clanking and had to see what the heck all the racket was..hahaa
He was fat & heavy, but also a lion tailed mangy ol guy.
The bottom AR15 is the one I built for him

What is your preference on thermal scopes? I would like to get one but not sure what to buy.

His is the flir RS32, 35mm scope, about $4100
Its the only Thermal scope I really have experience with.
I like them EXCEPT that the battery is only serviced by Flir since its non re-moveable as its inside the unit.
You can use a external battery pack for extended time as well.
Another pal has thermal scope, but I don't know what brand it is, only that his ran 6K+.
I like his since you can change batteries & use a external pack.
I use a 3rg gen night vision as it works much for better for me & my usages and I can see through it more like a day scope.
The thermals always change with the heat signatures and what the weather conditions are. You can have perfect vision nights in one spot then go 5 miles and get a lot of gray washout as I call it due to the conditions. It takes a bit of using to know how to scan in those conditions.
The biggest plus is that you can see game in tall grasses (thick warm stuff not so easy though) while in my 3rd gen scope with the IR on all I see is the grasses in front of the scope.

5spd,
I enjoy your posts. What NV scope are you running? Make and model please. If you had the option to buy again would you buy the same make and model again? Thanks for any and all info.

Paul,
Yes I would buy this same scope again
Night Optics D740 4x, auto gated.
A pal has the D740 6x, but I prefer a wider FOV as 99% of shots are 40-150 yards.
I have taken coyotes that have hung up at a tad over 400 yards as well.

Looking forward to your next post. Keep up the good work.

What twist are you running on the 6x45's? I have a 10 twist that doesn't seem to like the lighter bullets.

I switched to the 1/9" tw for all my 6x45 builds. Every bullet shoots under an inch at 100 yds.
I used to run 1/10" and changed since I use a lot of 80-95g bullets for medium game.
I did not have any problems with 55-70g bullets in the BHW 1/10" tw bbls. on my early builds.

I use an Armasight Zeus 3X24 75mm lens and killed my last hog three weeks ago at 334 yards at 10:15 PM. It has spare batteries that are quick to replace. I have seen antlers on deer at 500 yards at night. Can't say enough good about it. Killed one hog with a Gen three, but had to use a Flir to find it for the second shot. Thermal make target identification automatic. The digital crosshair is perfect and repeatable. I use -30 for 100-150 yards, -25 for 300, and used -23 for the heart shot at 334 yards. Got it from Mike at Techeyes.

Your adventures are getting, if not already, legendary.

Keep on having fun and get rid of all those mangy critters.
