What happens to shot out barrels ?

Thanks for all the responses Everyone! I was especially curious when it came to re making them into replacement barrels for hunting rifles and the like. Been wanting to ask that but don't wanna come off as more of a poverty teir pleb then usual :):D
So another question would be does anyone sell their old barrels for this purpose ( sorry it's the poor talking can't help it ;) ) mabye there's and outlet or something?
Remember I had a old gunsmith friend who I met in another site and we'd call and chat twice a month or so and he'd always mention how he wished he had a easy way to get ahold of take off barrel from bench rest or FClass guys. Always kind a stuck with me.
Anyhow thanks again for all the information on what everyone does ,really satisfied my curiosity!

Would someone with the knowledge and experience please share the custom actions that share the same thread diameter and pitch as a Remington 700? I understand that there is more to it than just thread size, but isn’t it easier than cutting off and starting over? Might also lose less length since it seems that BR barrels start relatively short. Losing some length is purposeful, but thought this might be a good idea. Seems like that info would help when considering using a former benchrest barrel for a Varmint rifle, or hobby target rifle.

Thanks, Peter.
The Farley Action that was popular back in the 1990/2000’s (still is to many of us), has a 1.062 16 TPI like a Remington. As I said in my previous post, I converted quite a few of my take off barrels to fit on Remington.

There was a little more involved than just running in the BR, reamer which, by the way with its linger neck and OAL freshened up the throat.

You also had to cut back the tenon for the recoil lug, and establish a shallow counterbore in the cone to clear the Remington bolt extension. It won’t be a full counterbore, but works out fine.

Not really a big deal for anyone with a lathe.

I've given about all my used up barrels away to fellas starting out with a lathe.

After reading most of these replies, I was surprised that some one didn't cut them up and use them to make chamber type seating dies.(?) WD

I'm surprise by this as well. Other uses as well such as throat gauges, thread protectors, pilots, etc. Barrels are made from some good steel. I can't see using them as a "tomato stake".

Makes me wonder if some of the bigger gunsmith shops don't use them as stock for other products they offer. Why not? In saying this, I always ask for my old barrels back.

@jackieschmidt

I assume you mean something like this?

I bought this Hart barrel from Jackie back in 2000 while I was stationed in Korea. It came from one of his Farley actions.
My GS did the mod you see and reamed it out to a 6-BR, .262 nk to match another rifle I have.

It was definitely worth the rechambering cost.

Here i am, teardrops falling in my beer! All those barrels repurposed for wind chimes, garden stakes, or thrown in a concrete pour? Just because it don’t hold under 1/2 MOA?
I may have to put a want add out there, especially if some of those tired out barrels are light varmint……

ok, stopped crying, just sweating now!

Before I had a bore scope most of the barrels I took off had fire cracking half way to the muzzle. They probably were not going to be good to anybody, maybe a pistol barrel.

i bought a few 30” strait taper used 6mm barrels when i started so i could practice chambering on them. I e got one ex SR bench barrel that i chambered to 6br and it shoots prettydarned good by my standards. another thing i do like Guns said is use the 6mm ones for ar15 barrels . -6x45– its a blaster anyhow. you gotta do your own work though or its not worth it.

A lot can be done with used barrels. But with any recycling, transportation and shipping cost are currently prohibitive.

Along with the cost of just about everything else :(

I like the idea of re-rifling. Not being a machinist, what would be involved and would it be worth it? I bought a Swede Mauser sporter on Gun Broker some years ago that I suspect had the original step-down military barrel cut down and re-rifled in .308 WIN. It shoots great!
