What ever happened with the 5/35 SMc

carl1575

I am still in the car business after 53 years
Rereading a old Precision Shooting April 2008 vol.55 no.12, is the story of a very intriguing varmint round. It was in between 204 Ruger and a 22-250, the story said that it would be available through the Savage custom shop. Has any one ever seen or shot one of these rifles?

:I must say when I read this same story in PS , it was time to call Kiff & get a reamer & headspace gauges. Then I bought some brass & barrel from Bruno's & started the build on a rem. mod. 7 action & a bell & carson light varmint stock. After completing the rifle, I was surprised at how good this rifle would shoot with a #5 contour tube ( in short ) this rifle has become one of the best long range crow shooters around. Not to bragg, but on a still day I have 2 winged a crow at just over 300 yds. & aced afew at over 500 yds. No this ammo was never produced nor picked-up by any of the major gun Co's. , but it sure is a lot of fun for critters from cyotes to barn varmints. My current load is 29.5 grs. of benchmark with a 40 gr. berger,,, with no wind I can shoot under 1 inch at 200 yds. & I think you can still contact Mic McFerson or just look it up on this webb sight. I bought plenty of brass as to not run low & i think LEE is still the only loadinding die maker but I could be wrong-------- I have had a lot of fun with this cartridge & hope you will also------ have a good one

I would have replied sooner but my son FIXED my computer for me, had to take to the pro to get it back to where I had ever thing the way I wanted. Its great to here from someone who actually has one, my brother and I were waiting for savage to make some kind of noise about it but I guess it just faded in to the sun set with no big fan fair. I have too many guns I have shot so little I shouldn't own them plus 3 I think I have never shot, so I don't need another project. But I am glad to hear that you built one and it shoots the way they said it would. Thanks for the reply- Carl in Yakima

I have one on a savage PTA and it is a true hummer. I also use the berger 40 grainer with benchmark. The last time I shot it, it printed several targets in the low 1's at a 100 yds.

Wasn't Pac-Nor chambering and selling dies for this at one time or do they still?

They(pac-nor) made barrels only and mic McPherson and by smalley had the dies made. There is no more brass that was made by norma however it is just modified 6 br brass in the first place.Rcbs made the seater under their gold medal line and lee made a sizer and a cheap seater. It can still be chambered by pac-nor and maybe kreiger. PTG made the reamers.
