What do you want to shoot in a long range 22 LR match?

I am trying to set up a long range 22LR match. It will be all steel. I would like to see KYL targets. Match stick and cards, then steel out to 200yds. for starters. We will shoot from benches, standing with rest, off hand, and some prone. Not a lot of up and down shooting positions, for guy with bad knee's, like myself. What do you want to shoot?

I'd say, the sky is the limit, but would highly suggest to keep it real, keep it practical. I shoot quite a bit of steel matches i.e. PRS, NRL, C&D, and it appears there's this trend to create ridiculous stages. When I say ridiculous, I mean non-practical. It has really gotten out of hand in my opinion. An example is place your rifle in, and supported by a hangman's noose, or shoot inside a tube supported by springs. Just this last weekend, we had a match on a ranch that has an unlimited amount of natural terrain, but the Match Director decided to add a stage where you shot sitting on a saddle mounted on an elevated 55-gal drum, and another stage shooting off a suspended chain. I understand that a square range can only offer so much in the way of positional options, but you need to keep it real. When I say real, don't create a stage that you would never shoot a rifle in that position in real life. Another example... Many people Varmint or Preditor hunt shooting from a truck window, hood, or bed. So make a stage that incorporates a vehicle. But don't create a silly stage shooting of a wobbly swing set.

Another thing, don't limit how someone wants to shoot at the target (position or gear), let them make the choice. Some matches force you to shoot prone, non-supported, and specify you have to have your elbow resting on the ground or on a rock, and you cannot have an elbow pad or padded jacket. I have nerve damage in my elbows, and that kind of stupidity just causes problems for people like me.

Alpine,
That is what I want to get away from, the ridiculous setups. I can make it hard by the target size, not the shoot position.

Check out some of the target racks I use in my long-range rimfire matches. I have some videos on YouTube showing some of them Topstrap44, easy to find if you search long-range xp100 as key words then watch the rimfire ones. Varying sizes, shapes and even varying the angle they are mounted makes it challenging.

Takes a while to get the correct target at the right distance, being able to switch them around keeps it interesting and challenging. Competitors love the steel, instant feedback with the movement and waiting for the "ding" to come back keeps it from getting boring.

I have a couple threads in this section about my matches here in Ohio. I have limits on ammo and equipment used but some matches allow anything. A lot of my competitors are older so I don't have the obstacles like the PRS type matches, more of a precision match but not a benchrest type competition.

Good luck, keep it fun.

You may want one stage the requires shooting weak side/eye/hand. That can be a real challenge and eye opener for for some that haven't tried/practiced it. don't ask how I know this ; ^ )

I forgot to add that I always try to have some type of unique challenge for a final bonus shot. Might be splitting a bullet on an axe at 50 yards, ranging an unknown distance target off to the side so they cantc compare to another rack, shooting off a rope slung across the front of my shelter or having them sight in on a distant target then blocking their view of the target for 10 or so seconds then they have to shoot while still hidden.

Lots of possibilities, use your imigination. These fun challenges are also a learning experience.

This is the dumb shit you should avoid at your match. No offense to Chuck, but the gimmicks gotta go away. Keep your match challenging, but fun and attainable. Nobody likes to miss. If it too hard or too gimmicky, people will not come back.

Also make sure you can shoot it. I keep seeing new matches pop up and the MD either didn't shoot the COF or is not even qualified to participate in that level of shooting.
