What do yall do with...???

What do yall do with shot out barrels? Honestly...? You never see any for sale on here "hey, I got a shot out barrel, $20 plus shipping to anyone that needs a fire form barrel".

Or does no one really shoot out barrels as fast as all the talk my lead one to think?!

Either or, it seems like more junk barrels would come up...

Just curious..

what cal are you looking for? I have bought several for $60-$100, they were still useful but not to take to a match. I have some Remington take-off's that are in good condition.

I used a few "take off" and "shot out" barrels to learn the rudiments of chambering and fitting barrels. Best $65 I spent was for a medium Palma Krieger chambered in .308win that had 3060 rounds through it and was "no longer competitive". Rechambered it in .300Win Mag, shot it all last summer, and it consistently produced 1/2-3/4moa groups until around the 1500 round mark.

There are plenty of used barrels out there. Most are worth the cost of an odd shaped bar with a hole through it but some still have use as a barrel.

I once sent a guy a shot out barrel. All I asked is he send me the cost of postage after he received it and he said he would. He never did. That's the last thing I sent without payment first. I remembered his name and address for about 12 years and have since forgotten.
Edit.
He was in New York, not Alaska.

My local gunsmith always has some plan for them. He never sends them out as scrap-metal. Hunting Barrels, Tools of different kinds, made me a 14" bloop-tube from one of them for my smallbore rifle.

He's always asking for take-off barrels.

@Sniper338 -

My own input to the topic: have several that have lost there competitive edge that do not live up to my accuracy expectancy for competition use. Would not consider them "shot out", just primarily they wont agg and/or have lost consistency. For the most part, I use them from time to time for testing, fire-forming, plinking, etc. But some do just sit in the rack collecting dust... lol

Fire forming, bushings, stock pillars, ferrules. And yes, tomato stakes . . . .

Chop 5" to 7" from the breach and 1" form the muzzle of a 30" tube, turn it down a bit and chamber it for a hunting rifle.

I find the first several inches are the problem of a shot out barrel. Take that out and you get a second life as a hunting stick.

Stainless ones make a wonderful property line marker...they are easy to see in the woods and underbrush and easy to find when you need to. It's as if surveyors purposely use those stupid little pieces of brown re-bar capped with a little tiny yellow plastic top {always driven level with the surface I might add} just so you have to call them back and pay for having the markers "located" !!!!!

Just cleaned up the shop in anticipation of moving. How many would you like? I have 1.850" diameter barrels on down. About 800 lbs of barrel drops and barrels. Then there's the factory take off pile.

That's a GREAT idea!

When DaveTooley runs out, give me a call. I'm in the same boat!
