What chamber to use?

Alright guys, I want to order a new barrel to put on my Savage f class. It already has a 6br and shoots 3 in groups at 600. But now I want something that will shoot good out to 3-400 yards but is cheaper to shoot than my 6br. Maybe a 223 or 223imp? Something that the brass is cheaper and bullets and powder also. I just want to have more time behind the trigger without the wife yelling at more for shooting more than 700 6mm bullets a year. Oh yeah and its got to have good barrel life also. But I want good speed. Am I asking too much? Sorry for making you guys read all of this... Thanks for looking, and let me know what you guys think.

Interesting question. Hard to imagine anything with great accuracy that is also cheaper to shoot than the 6BR. My first thought was to go the other way up to a 30BR shooting light weight bullets.

Bullets and powder would be about the same, but the savings might well be in doubling the barrel life versus the 6BR. I could easily see some ways to save on bullets and powder but at the cost of faster barrel wear and brass life. Anyway, it is an interesting question, and I'll be interested to see what others think.

The problem with .222 or .220 Russian family cases is that they each require a different bolt head, offsetting your potential cost savings. Tony's suggestion was a good one and the .30 BR is fun to shoot. How about a slower twist 6BR barrel for lighter bullets? They would be good to 300-400 yards and cheaper than 105-108 bullets.

Yep, how about a 12 twist 6BR with lighter pills? They run a bit cheaper and still have the accuracy your looking for. 65 or 75 V-Max should fit the bill.

Go with Steve and Joes suggestion, or just shoot the 70-80gr pills in your 8 twist. - cheapest option all round. (actually the 105gr Amax is the cheapest combo I found - lowest powder volume vs cheapest bullet combo) Hard to imagine you can buy another barrel plus dies, brass etc to "save" on the already cheap to shoot 6BR. With the 12 twist option you have all the dies and powder, higher speed (as you wanted). Same powder allows you to buy bulk tins etc. Look at it this way - your wife will still nag at buying 1000 bullets at a cheaper price but now she has you "over the barrel" as well. :D.
If however your barrel is a real shooter and you want to preserve it for matches etc then that is another story......

The 30BR comments are good. I can't imagine one ever wearing out so the cents per shot over barrel life is negligible. The problem is you have to buy the barrel now and dies etc now and more brass now, so the c per shot this year become extreme.

Yup, I have to fund my obsession with odd cash jobs so the wife doesn't see the bills....
This doesn't get any better with age.

The real issue Josh is it's hard to get barrel life & speed. Probably the best at this is still the 6BR with lighter bullets. 30BR never wears out and is a great round but speed is down - you can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you are swinging toward speed -the other one we didn't suggest is stick with the BR family again but go down to 20 or 22BR. You got the velocity, you got the accuracy, a bit cheaper to shoot (except for brass and barrels). You can use your same neck sizing die with different bushings, perhaps even the bump die (in combination with neck sizing).

Looking at all this we have suggested 6mmBR, and 3 other BR rounds - either side of what you have - is there a compromise in the middle somewhere??

So have we confused you enough -?? Which way are you swinging??

I thought I was the only one that did that ;D

You need to do a little math before buying anything. You can buy a lot of powder and bullets for what a new barrel, dies, bullets etc. will cost. There are a lot off good bullets under the 107s that an 8 twist will shoot. Later! Frank
