What Cartridge For Rem 700 Long Action?

Not sure where this post would fit best, it since I only load my own ammo, this may be a good place.

I have a spare R700 long action sitting around and am thinking of building a Remage barrel rifle to play with. It is a standard bolt face and will be used for 600 f-class and maybe short range BR. I want to keep recoil as minimal as possible, preferably less then .284w. Right now I am leaning towards 6.5-284, is there something else similar out there that may get better barrel life with similar recoil? Would 6.5-47 be worth a deeper look? I also like easy button cartridges lol.

I have a 700 long action chambered in 6.5x47L for mid range f class. It’s very mild to shoot.
How was load development with it, pretty forgiving? Like 6 dasher easy button style, or more like 223 FTR style?

I ask because may try some button rifled barrels and would prefer something that is inherently accurate to begin with.

My 6.5-47s are easy to load for. Very accurate cartridge. I like the 6.5x55 Swede in a long action. Also easy to load accurate rounds. I built a custom on a Stiller long action and the boltface worked with out modifications. A little more barrel life than the 6.5-284.

If 6.5-284 gets the nod, look into the 153s. Mine was built long before any bullets were made over 142, so it hasn't got the twist to make them fly. I do wish i could shoot them just to see if they are that much better.

While the 6.5x47 is getting some love, I'll toss out the 260 rem or 260 rem AI. Will be fine in a long action, just had a 260ai tube screwed onto a long action. Cheap and plentiful brass options. Mild recoil.

In a pawn shop of all places I found a LR BR 700 LA in the Swede. SOB that gun would shoot, but the 700 action was rough feeling so I didn't keep it. (current member of the 'smooth action snob club')
From your 'wants' the cartridge that popped into my mind that I've always wanted to try is the 6-06. Sizing down 25-06 brass should be easy enough. Though to get better brass maybe the 6mm CM seated long would be a better choice.
No worries with a short cartridge in a long action. I had a 22br on a long action at one point!

im in the same boat- got a r700LA in safe and a new 6.5 blank on the shelf in rem varmint taper. i think ill go with 6.5 swede or 6.5/06. the 6.5/06 over the swede mabie cause it has the standard boltface- lots of 30/06 brass around - about as much velocity potential as a 6.5/284- always wanted a 6.5 swede in a modern action though. plus lapua brass is available most of the time. i may have to flip for it but ive narrowed it down to those two.

PS— if i didnt have the 6.5 barrel allready id seriously consider the 7x57 - it needs a LA and should perform well in a modern action

I’m going to look into 260 a bit, it has caught my attention just a bit lately.

I read a little about the 6.5-06 yesterday, now I’m about to look up the 7x57 lol.

6.5x47 - or just 6.5 Creedmoor - not so different and with plenty of good brass to choose from. The 6.5/06 is nice,I had a hunting rifle some years ago - but not for the range and the 7/57 is so close to the 284, why bother - and the brass is often hard to find. I'm looking at putting a 7-08AI together on a Sako L579 that I just "found" For much the same purpose - just a fun rifle to own and shoot. Probably a light Palma/Varmint profile.

I have a 6.5 x 47 on a short action and I like it a lot. I mostly shoot 142 SMKs and 130 AR Hybrid bullets because with anything longer the bullets are seated too deep into the case and I’m giving up too much powder space. With the long action you can add some freebore for the long bullets and use a lot of the neck for powder, if you want to use the long wind-cheaters. You may need to narrow down which bullets you will use ahead of time since there are such a wide range of bullet lengths in that caliber and some of the shorter bullets may be jumping a lot more than you want them too, in case that’s a problem.

I've never had any luck with the 6.5/47. I've had great luck with a 30/06, 6.5/284, 260, 6.5/55, 7/57. My personal opinion is go with the 6.5/284 and never look back!

260 Ackley will do anything the 6.5-284 will with less powder and recoil. 140 class bullets at 2900 plus pretty easily. Fire forming is the only downside to the cartridge but brass will last forever and in my experience fire forming loads are quite accurate as well. I won a match one time fire forming new brass. My old barrel was just magical.
