What caliber to build? That is the question...

I bought an XP 100 action today... planned on building a 20 Vartarg. Then I bought a 20 vartarg this evening on a borden br action... so now I have a XP100 action with no plans... going to get a ptg bolt and sell the dog leg bolt.. so bolt face is anything...

6 ppc
6 grinch
6 grendel
6 bra
30 major
30 BR

Only target calibers...?? Any others that are fabulous?

Already have a 6BR shooting 105 bergers...

This will now be a dedicated target bench gun...

Help a feller decide...

BRA or Grinch but it really depends on what kind of target shooting your talking about. Distance?

Just depends on what you want to use it for...

My latest toy is for the varmint matches that we shoot around here. You need almost benchrest accuracy, but you need a wind cheater, bigger holes are an advantage, and you have up to 25 lbs to play with.

I tried a 284 Shehane. It's a fine cartridge, but too much for the game at hand as we never shoot beyond 500 yards.

So, I played around and ended up getting Dave Kiff to grind me a reamer for a 7x47 Lapua. It's turned out to be a sweet, forgiving, and versatile cartridge. Think 6 BR scaled up.

But, I shoot a 30 Major a lot. Most accurate 100-200 yard rifle that I've ever owned.

Up to 600 yards if anything... but 100-300 would be a norm... no niche for it... just a fun, target, bet your buddy, paper puncher..

I got an extra box of 6br brass just sitting...

I have a 6ppc, a Dasher and two 6BRS. If I had your problem and had to do something with a extra action I would be leaning towards one of the 30s you mention. Your covered with your 6BR but you can never have enough.

Let us know what you decide.

Shows the 7x47. Various bullets touching the lands with the full bullet diameter above the neck/shoulder junction and fitting in an AI 308 mag.

Those are 120 and 150(?) NBT and a Berger 165(?) VLD. It will also do 110 gr Speers.

The test rifle. Tikka action, Broughton action, in a Manners stock. About 8 pounds. Followed by the first three down the pipe. It's a nice little play rig.

I had my 284 Shehane rechambered in for it. Very, very nice. I'm also having another built on it using another Tikka action, but in an Eliseo chassis this time.

Sniper I'm envious. I've been looking for a XP action (large Bolt face) with no luck.

It really depends on the distance and the amount of brass you will need between loading sessions, just my feelings and I'm no expert. Out to 600 the 6BR is tough to beat. Next step would be the BRX or BRA, from there the Dasher. Takes a lot of time to form a pile of Dasher brass.

If your plans are to sell the dog leg bolt, PM me I might be interested. Anyone have a XP action tucked away they might having been planning a project for that now isn't going to happen?

I don't have the XP, but do have a Weatherby CFP.

+1. Of you don't have one, the 30BR is incredibly accurate, easy to reload for and very forgiving. It is also perfect for shorter distance whereas many of the others you list are better suited for 600 yds plus!
