What blank?

If you take the smithing involved in finishing a barrel out of the equation, who makes the blank to have over all others? Caliber would be .338".

Tough call. My guess would be the barrel maker that has the caliber, twist and contour you're after, available in the shortest amount of time. Pac Nor, Shilen etc. or just about any brand. Never had a problem with Shilen, Pac Nor, Douglas, Wilson, Shaw or whoever. All good stuff. Pick and choose.

I second what Mikie said, its a very Ford VS Chevy debate. All that he listed are top brands and will shoot as good as the next. Most have a backorder list though. I usually call them and ask if they have any preorders that were canceled. I've found they had just what I wanted collecting dust on a shelf. Does not always happen but its worth shaving a couple months on your wait.

In that case, who makes the chevy barrel? I don't want a broke down ford barrel. I have had several from Lothar Walther and have been very pleased (2 prefits and 3 custom ordered). Have had a couple of the prefits from A&B from Midway and have been just as pleased. My very first Pacnor is on order and with any luck only has about 5 weeks left before it is done. My next build is in the works already and to save me some time I would like to get the barrel blank in my hands.

I have several 3 groove SuperMatch tubes from Pac-Nor's, they shoot better than I ever will and I see no need to switch to the competition. As a plus, their staff (including Rick and Penny) is outstanding.

The last time I ordered from Pac Nor, I was told 8 to 12 weeks. Got a call from Penny that it was in the works and to expect it in 4 weeks. Good folks to deal with, any time. Take your pick and get in line. ;)

You and Mr. Art Hammer must be on the preferred customer list, lol. I don't expect a phone call to tell me my barrel is being made. I will just wait patiently for the brown truck to deliver the unmistakable packaging of a new barrel. I have nothing but good things to say about the staff at Pacnor. Amy is the one that took my original order and was super knowledgeable about there products and just shooting in general. Penny is the one I talked to about two weeks after I placed the order to change the caliber and shank size of the barrel. It was originally ordered as a small shank 1:10 twist .338 Lapua Magnum and now is a large shank (target action) 1:8 twist 6mmbr. The Lapua magnum is now in the works again but I got such a killer deal on the target action that I couldn't see using it for a .338.

HAHAHA well said, Chevy owner hear ;). Actually my last 2 barrels where from Lothar and I love them. I've had great results and they ship out much faster than the other guys. Prices are nice too.
