what best to do with a 550 magnum action?

I am looking for opinions on what may be the best 338 derivative to drive a 300 gr sierra at 3000 fps out of a 28 inch barrel? Would any one like to offer up personal opinion and what questions I may want to ask before I start the build. I have done this once or twice before but nothing as large as this. I would also like to know about the dimensions on the 550 and what mods might need to be done to handle any caliber advice.

.338/416 rigby improved might get you to 3000--might be hard on brass. or .338 snipe tac, will get you to 3300 fps with ease.

I have a stock AR-30 in 338LM and I am getting almost 2800 with the 300grSMK. I am shooting a good load but not all that stiff. My brass has lasted me many firing cycles. You may want the improved option but like stated before brass life will suffer if you push it too much. I am getting good accuracy at 1500.

Can't beat the 338 Snipe-Tac built by Dave Viers ( viersco.com ). Mine was built on a Lawton 8000 Action and a Lawton 32 inch barrel. My load was 143.22gr of US869 with a Fed 215M primer pushing a 265gr HENSON Alum tip bullet at 3496fps. Shot a real nice bull Elk last Thanksgiving with this gun. It's an awesome shooter!!

338 Snipe-Tec? what is the parent and will it fit in to the 550 action? i thought that the snipe was the 408 chytec case taken down?

Correct! It is a 408 Chey-Tac necked down for a .338 bullet.
What Brand and Model action do you have?

there are 3 chamberings of this .338 with slight diffences in dimensions, but all based off the .408 chey tac. .338 snipetac, .338 allen mag, and .338 chey tac. i talked with mike rock--owner of rock creek barrels and he said that he helped develop the .338 snipetac and he was demonstrating the rounds performance at 1000+ yards with some military folks, and from what he said he was getting index card size groups at a grand!!!! thats a 300 sierra at 3300 fps!

I emailed Kirby Allen of Allen Magnum Fame and he did not recomend putting any of the 408 pased wildcats into the 550 magnum action. have you heard any one doing this class cartridge on the CZ. I trust kirby and like the idea of a LP any way due to the HET from CZ being its sister and good comparason.
