What barrel specs for Palma and ftr?

I know it would be better to have two different barrels but I’m not competing seriously with this thing. Just fun local club matches. What would be a barrel spec for a 308 where I could stabilize the 185 or 200-20x and shoot Palma Bullets with it? Not too heavy to hold prone. Thanks

What chamber is recommended for that weight bullet? I’m using the 2011 fullbore and I’d never get a 200 grain bullet to fit

One thing to consider. Palma contours have a 2.5 inch breach section at 1.25 before they taper. That gives you one chambering once it’s done you really can’t re-chamber it. There isn’t room to cut off the stub and start over.

A number of guys who run Palmas custom order with a 4 or 5 inch breach section so the barrel might have some usefulness with a re-chambering, and it gives you some mass for a heat sink where all the hot is stored.

I am doing a Palma barrel at the moment, keeping all the straight for the chamber, and cutting 1 inch off the muzzle, it can still finish at 32.

Is there a major issue keeping it 32?

Is there a reason why no one made the recommendation of a Heavy Varmint contour barrel ? Weight ?

If he’s shooting prone I assumed he was goin to have the front turned down for a sight. Heavy Vs don’t usually play that way, and I have heard sling shooters comment that heavy gets tiring

Sure does - faster than I thought it would.

34” carbon fiber, mod BB, 1.45” gain twist

There are options. One is that you shoot FTR with 155g and chamber the rifle accordingly, the other is a compromise chamber that may allow you to get reasonable accuracy, seating a 155g Palma bullet in a longer freebore. I would chat with the gunsmith on that one. My FTR rifle is currently a 155 gun. 13 twist barrel etc. and shoots "Ok' to 1000 ( when I learn to read wind properly) Medium Palma profile 28". Keeps well within weight limit, even with a heavy scope. My next barrel will be a 10 or 11 twist. ( if you cant beat them...)

I too have shot FTR with both 14 twist and 12 twist Medium Palma 30" barrels. Both shoot very competitively at 300 to 600 yards with 155g bullets in standard TR prone type chambering. It is only at the longer ranges where you will be disadvantaged with the standard chambering, because you can't shoot the heavier wind bucking bullets.

This exactly what I do. It's been working out well for years.
