What barrel contour for 10.5# LV Rifle

I had Bob Green make up a barrel with his tuner for my 10.5 6ppc. It is lighter than a LV but shoots great. Tomorrow I am shooting it in a 500 yd match.Panda with 45x Leupold Comp. Tomorrow I will shoot it in heavy gun class, no fear, right.

I shot the year end Groundhog Match at Mifflin County Sportsmen today with this little 6ppc and won Heavy Gun class with a 149 x 150 7x including a perfect 50 at 500 yds. A big heavy barrel is NOT a necessity. Most of the guns in this class push the 17 pound weight limit. My PPC weighs 10 lbs 5 oz including the scope.

Basically you will use the light end of LV. contour and it should come in around 4lb. 12 oz.... But all said it will be determined by the weight of components, stock, action trigger and scope and mounts... jim

Not always, after you weigh all components and then do your math and see where you have to cut the LV. barrel to make weight.....
Ive never seen or built a LV rifle with anything but a LV barrel. Of course there are personal variations such as a bruno LV taper but its going to be a LV barrel on a LV rifle in the end if you use it in registered competition with todays components

Not saying that, it is where you have to cut the LV. barrel to make weight. With the bigger and heavier scopes and tuners . I don't think you will be using much of the heavy end any more.... jim

No we’ve had to cut a nice chunk from the big end for many years. It hurts pretty bad

That has been my biggest question about how much of the straight part of the barrel to keep.
So is it necessary to keep any of the straight?

You have to make weight. You want the longest barrel possible. So taking inches off the big end removes more weight than the same length on the small end. Your br gunsmith will have a makeshift chart on what diameters on both ends will end up weighing after the chamber is cut. You can only take so much off the big end to still have a good shoulder so theres another roadblock.

you have to subtract the weight of the a 5 oz.tuner hanging out on the end of the barrel to the equation plus you need to balance it. Plus no more 17 oz. scopes anymore are 21-2 oz. now ..... jim
