What am I doing wrong 30 BR issues

Hello everyone!

I recently purchased a used 30 BR from Cabela’s literally zero info on it so I need to make ammo for it of course because it’s a wildcat

So I went and bought

Lupua 6mm BR Norma brass
Redding 30 BR Remington dies (I can’t find a 30 BR Norma set)
.323 Redding Ti bushing
Rcbs shell holder no 3

So for fun I tried to neck up and a piece of said Lupua 6mm br to 30 BR in one pass using what I felt was a proper amount of lube but all that happened is the neck opened up but squished at the the shoulder junction and will not enter the die any further brand new just cleaned dies now I’ll be the first to admit this is my first foray into BR cartridges but I have zero idea as to why the brass won’t go into the dies did I buy the wrong ones? Any thoughts tips tricks advice is appreciated and welcomed I’m sure going At this like a caveman isn’t the best but I thought surely I could neck up a little bitty piece of brass….

Are you using expander mandrels?
Might Try these

Or these
Cortina makes some cool stuff
-----------------
I'm wondering if maybe you need to do an intermediate step say to 284 first before going straight to 30
as I know the same thing can happen when going in reverse
necking 30 cal down to 243.
The more intermediate steps you can take, the easier it is on the brass

Not sure what's causing your issue but it's generally a very straightforward operation. You might get an expander die and mandrel. I'm betting that will cure whatever problem your having.

Might need to expand the brass in steps instead of one big step from 6mm to 30 cal. A .270 expander will put you in the center of the one step. However, Redding makes a die button that will take the necks up from 6mm to 30 cal. but still requires good lube of inside of the necks. I find it best to use expanders instead of using the sizing die to bring the necks up to 30 cal. Once this is done then move forward with turning the necks to fit the chamber.

Is it possible to have the sizing ball set to high and trying to expand the neck and shoulder while it’s contacting the die?
Very possible, or even partially
----------------------------------------
One other thing that hasn't been covered
Sometimes when forming certain wildcats
I had to NOT, anneal first or else run the risk of collapsing the shoulder
in certain cases it was better to leave the brass alone
and wait to anneal after all the forming
anneal
then fireform

One more major tip
Mink Oil (for boots) as lube

Use one of these with lube inside the neck and on the expander; start it in to open up the neck, pull it out, spin the brass 1/2 turn, ease it the rest of the way in. Works like a charm.
Forgot to add, be gentle.

Get the pma expander mentioned above.

Lots of imperial.

I don’t know if there’s a difference in 30 BR dies for Norma/Remington. Probably so?
That's why I mentioned using Mink oil instead
I exlusively use Imperial
But have been forming some brass recently
and got 2 cases stuck in the die which I had to extract
VERY noticebale improvement with Mink Oil
At least twice as lubristic as Imperial
--------------
Even with imperial, right at the point of almooooost getting the ram to the bottom and sizing this brass
I could feel it about to get stuck in the die
Switched to Mink oil.............
.......................smooth as snot

This is how I do it as well and never had a split neck or collapsed shoulder. Works great.

Nope I stuck the brass in the dies like I’ve done with any other reloading I’ve ever done
Obviously doesn’t work
You have to expand the 6BR to 30
In other words .243 to .308
I expand by using a 308 mandrel
Set the case in the shell holder
Lube the mandrel ( also inside neck a bit)
This is not one big push
Rather run the case into the mandrel a bit
Down with the case
Turn case roughly 90°
Back into the mandrel a bit further
Check the lube on the mandrel, make sure it’s lubed
Continue to run the case into the mandrel a bit more each time and lower it and spin the case again
Eventually the whole neck is opened to the correct diameter. Nothing gets crushed
You now have a case that be loaded like any other.
The lube etc., is a matter of preference.
All of the above is what I do. And for me it works perfectly every time.
Are there other methods? I bet.

Just read post #8 or at least viewed a bit of it.
Sorry I wasted my time posting the above
Actually when reading the original OP post I should have realized he had a lot to learn. Then I read about firing 243 in a 30BR chamber.
Wrong site for me as I don’t want to contribute to an accident.
Consequently the entire post I made is merely what I do and I do not recommend it for anyone.

You don't expand the necks in a regular sizing die. You use an expanding mandrel in a expander body. PMA, Sinclair and others make these. I expand from 6 to .30 in one step using a tapered Redding expander. If you're not equipped to do this, I'd highly suggest you buy some some brass that's prepped and neck turned for your first time. -Al
