WHAT ACTIONS ARE ABLE TO USE FOR CUSTOM GUNS

I think that it all depends on your definition of custom gun. What is yours? I like rifles that are as accurate as they can be. Obviously, there are shooters out there that have rifles built who do not have much of an understanding of what it takes to achieve this, and/or whose idea of accuracy is more easily satisfied than mine. If you want the best results, it seems to me that one should pay some attention to whose rifles are shooting the best.

"WHAT ACTIONS ARE ABLE TO USE FOR CUSTOM GUNS"

You can customize any gun, nothing to really stop you. Money is the big factor and so many guns are not customized because they are not worth throwing money at them to do it. Some guys will cry about this, but it's true...brands like Savage and Mossberg are "cost effective" guns, so you wont really see heavy customizing unless someone is really in love with one of them. In a few minutes they will post on here about how their $400 Savage will out shoot everyone's custom $5000 rifle, okay, so keep it and love it.
Put a $400.00 barrel, $200 trigger, $600-$1000 stock, $2500 scope and $1000 plus in gunsmithing fees on a Savage or Mossberg and you still just have a Savage or Mossberg. You would probably be questioned as to why at best and laughed at for the most part. Then do the same with a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, people will take you seriously and you wont have much trouble seeing which one will sell. Being able to get some or most of your money back out of a custom gun project usually dictates which guns will be used as the base.

Assuming that your definition of a custom rifle includes tight groups, then your best choice of action for the rifle is one of the choices listed by Nat Lambeth. There are custom rifles built from both Remington and Savage actions that shoot very well and there are rifles built with almost every other production action that also shoot very well. But, the most consistent performance and the best long term value for your money is, in my opinion, a custom action. One does not see very many production actions on the firing line at any of the highly competitive shoots. You probably should read the action link on the home page of accurateshooter.com.

A generation or so ago , it was very normal to have a custom built on a mauser or Springfield . Today very few gunsmiths would do it . Probably due to the expense in labor it takes to do so .
One of my favorite new actions to build on is the Remington 783 . It takes savage small shank barrels , is rigid , easy bolt lift , decent trigger . Oh and it's very inexpensive .

There are quite a few custom gunsmiths in the U.S. This site deals primarily with Benchrest gunsmiths. There is a big difference. Look at a David Miller built gun to realize that;)
