What action to pick

Hello All.
First, I want to say what a great forum to visit. I've been visiting for about a month now and like what I see. I just registered and hope to get some information for now and more later.
I'm am starting two long range varmint rigs, roughly 300-600yds). I am thinking of making one a 6BR, not sure on the other. I have about 4-5 years to build and need some advice on actions.
I plan to build them myself, been involved with machining for almost 20 years. So the expense of blueprinting an action is mainly my time and materials.
The main question I have is what action to use. Has anyone had any experience with the Remington 798? Is it as easy to blueprint as the 700 or are there problems with it? The reason I ask is trying to find a used short action in the 700 for the right price is proving to be a challenge and I can get a barreled short action 798 from Midway.
Also, has anyone used a 700 long action with the 6BR? or would the short action be better? I seem to be able to find the long actions easier.
I have many questions to come at a later time. Hopefully your patience will hold up.

The Remington 798 is a comercial mauser action, they took over the charles daly mausers, which used to be interarms MK-X. I have a 260 Remington on the charles daly action with a boyds thumbhole target stock, used an A&B barrel from midway for it for the blued/stainless looks, great looking gun and hell of a good shooting gun. But for what your describing, I would say the Remington 700 short action. Mainly cause its easy to get different parts for. Theres tons of aftermarket stuff for it. You can get a Rem 700 short action from academy anywhere from $300 for the ADL to $445 for the SPS. The ADL's are getting hard to come by though. There is a guy on the classifieds forums here selling Short action remington for a fair price.

Do yourself a big favor and DON'T buy a Remington action. They are very good actions as everyone will tell you, however, you will have to do a bit of work on them before they are really read to go. Instead, give Jerry Stiller a call and look real hard at his Predator actions. These are a drop in clone for the Rem700, only already nice and square, and ready to go. Price is right too!
He's on the web, but I don't have a link for you just know. By the way, I have 3!

They may have good products at Stiller but I'm personally giving up on purchasing an action from them. I first tried contacting them by phone several times and had no luck with replies on their answering machine. I emailed them and it took 11 days before I had a reply. I replied back wanting to purchase and it's been six more days now with no reply. They don't seem to want my business. It's been seventeen days now and I've not been able to even place an order. With this kind of service before the sale I don't want to take a chance on what will happen after the sale. Sorry for the rant and I don't know their situation but I do know I'm a new shooter wanting to purchase and they've lost my business.

If you want a project, get the Remington Mauser-type. If you want a really good all around action, I really like my Surgeon. If you want a 6BR to feed from the magazine, I would suspect the shorter the better like a Remington Model Seven. My 2 cents.

That's a shame, and also a bit strange! I purchased a TAC 300 from Stiller in early spring and have never had any trouble contacting them. As it says on their website, Jerry is usually in the office in the morning taking care of paperwork, and when I've called he's always been there to answer any questions I might have. Also, he's never failed to respond to my e-mails within two days.

I don't know. Maybe I've just got bad luck or timing. I do know I need to quit hijacking your thread 2700tenx. Sorry. I'll quieten down unless it's to do with your question. Thanks for being patient.

If you like the idea of working on a solid bolt front locking action, consider the push feed Win 70's, Howa/Wby Vanguard, Rem788's/722.

For a military action, the P17 Enfields are my favorite and strong like an ox. The timney triggers can be worked done to ounces for dirt cheap. I have made some Mausers but prefer the Enfields.

Right now, I build all my rifles off the Savage or Stevens action. There is nothing to do except spin on a barrel and shoot great groups.

I bought a Diamondback from him back in the spring. He couldn't have been more helpful. He was telling me about his expansion plans.
He may be in the middle of it and that's what's keeping from getting back to you.
All these guys are so busy with back orders it's a wonder they have time to call at all.
Stiller said he was so backed up on Predators he hadn't been able to put any time in on his other work.
I got lucky. I wanted a right port/ right bolt and he happened to have one on the shelf. I guess rp/rbs aren't too popular.
