what 7mm?

My vote is a 7 RM. I have a 26" Shilen barrel and 8" twist and I'm at 2986 with best accuracy.
I did get up to 3132', but groups opened up and I was pushing the pressure limit,
so I backed off and found way better accuracy running 180 VLD's and Retumbo powder.

A 7mm that will push a 180 gr to 3,000 in a rifle with a 26" barrel and is light enough to tote is a lot more thump on the back end than I would want to deal with.

The felt recoil is essentially the same as a 270 Winchester firing a 150 grain bullet, or, a 270 WSM firing a 160 grain bullet at 3000 fps.

Ahhhh, just thinking here so if you smell something odd that's my brain cells burning.........But how long do you expect the barrel too last, by the time you get the load development done the barrel is half smoked?

I hear ya. I have plenty of practical guns I shoot more often. My desires have taken a turn to extreme range and im looking for performance. Im pretty new to the elr game but I find I shoot less and think more. Barrel life in a gun for a mile plus is kind of a trade off in most cases. When its smoked I get a new barrel!

You might take a look at 280 Rem AI, I built one with a Stolli Grizzly II action, Broughton 5C benchrest barrel, medium Palma, 31 inches, prone stock by Carl Bernosky. Brass available( Nosler ),recoil very managable. Launches 180VLD's at 2950 fps with IMR 7828 SSC, into one hole at 200 yds, hammers the X ring at 600. I have no regrets. Other than it shoots better than I do ;P

Gee, I'm happy with my 284 WIN with either 162 A-MAX or 189 Hybrids ( when available). Course, I have a 30" barrel to get 2830 or so and it works good to 1000yd. I would expect a 26" barrel would still have a sweet spot where the ballistics are still good.

Barrel will last longer than a mag as well as recoil being acceptable.

I'm shooting 180gr hybrids out of a straight .284W with a 28" barrel. My limited load testing of 5 shot groups using of 48.5gr of 2209 sees speeds average 2697fps with an SD of zero and an ES of 1.8 while 49.5gr of 2209 (max is 51.5gr) sees speeds of 2740fps at sea level and an SD of 2.8 and ES of 6.8

It seems my barrel could easily be pushed to speeds over 2800fps but I tested for accuracy not velocity. It's a target gun so the lower node is desirable for both accuracy and barrel life

My rem 700 sendero in 7 rm is pushing 168's at 3050 without much effort and it is 26" from the factory. I like it. Someday its groups will open up and it will get a 28". No real reason or need, just because it will be different.

What are you using for a chronograph where you can measure velocities to less than 1 fps?

I didn't notice that when I posted. Seems very strange to have a tenth but it's what's written in my shooting log and came straight out of the stats in my RCBS ammomaster chronograph. Entry level but group vertical appears to back up its numbers
