West Coast Ground Squirrels

I was wondering if anyone knows of a ground squirrel call (west coast ground squirrel, not tree squirel). I hear them making differeint kinds of noise, but it is usually when they have spotted me. I'll looking for something that will entice them to come out of their holes quicker after each shot. Let me know if you have some kind of dark secret up your sleve.

If they are like the Richardton Ground Squirrel (Gopher) that we have around here you can actually buy a little whistle that will draw them out of their holes. I laughed when I first saw it but it does work. Might check some ranch supply stores. That's where I found this one.

Here in Nevada and N. Cal we have the Beldings Ground Squirrel, its a cousin of the Richardson. I have had good luck using a mouse sqeeker( as used in predator calling) on both. Can be found at most sporting goods store

I am an old ground squirrel shooter and never use a call. The squirrels in California hibernate during the winter months and start to come out in February, then more in March. The best months are April and May. They taper off in June, and by July they have gone back underground. They love the alfalfa fields. A all would be interesting, and they might work, but I have never had the use for one because where I shoot, the squirrels are thick as fleas.

Sit in a field for about 5 minutes when they are active and you can get the whistle down pretty easy. I have never used a store bought call. I use my mouth. Just don't "squeek" really loud or do "kissy" sounds with your lips. That will cause them to head for their holes. I grew up in S.OR and hunted there and N.CA. Have help clean out many a farmer's or rancher's field.
