Well I guess no 155gr Scenars for me

Had a Palma 95 chamber cut to run 155gr SMK's
Tried the scenars, WAY longer bearing length, they were sticking past the neck and well into the shoulder. Pretty sure that would be crunching my powder and be generally detrimental to accuracy.
Oh well. Live and learn. Got about 2000 more rounds to go before replacing the barrel.
Suggestions what kind of chamber to run for 155 gr scenars and probably 185 juggernauts? Edit: I guess its a throating issue?

Ok so I am using the method of taking out the plunger out of the rem 700 bolt to measure exactly where the bolt lifts without a problem.
I took measurements with a caliber base of the bullet to the ogive.
155SMK is 2.181" 155 Scenar is 2.171

I recently had a new barrel chambered and throated specifically for these two bullets based on other forum member's comments. We started with a 0.090" FB JGS reamer and throated out to a finished FB of 0.157." This seems to corroborate the US FTR reamer (0.168" FB) which works well with the 185 Juggernaut. I've read that the bare minimum for the 185 Juggernaut is in the 0.085" range, but from my base to ogive minus boat tail measurements, the 155 Scenar-L may well require an extra 0.020" of FB.

By my measurements, the 155 SMK (2156) and 155 Scenar-L are +/- 0.115" different when comparing Base to Ogive minus boat tail dimensions. The 185 Juggernaut being within 0.020 of the 155 Scenar-L also serves to corroborate the +/- 0.050" FB you'll see used for NON Scenar 155 Palma specific chambers when compared to the +/- 0.160" we came up with for the 185s and 155 Scenar.

FWIW, I also ran the Berger Twist calculator for the same bullets and went with a 1:11 twist. The 155 Scenar is also +/- 0.100" longer than the SMK, so even though I have not personally tested them side by side, (and I'm sure someone, somewhere, at some altitude, on some day has seen it work) I would not assume the 155 Scenar will perform at its best in a typical 1:13 Twist palma barrel.

Nothing wrong with a compressed load, just make sure you work up to it to find where pressures get too high.
My lowest ES load is a compressed load.
Just because a bullet is of the same weight as one you are using doesn't mean they're interchangeable.

ok I have another silly question. There is a letter "L" stamped on the back of the bullet (base) wouldnt that affect how the bullet performs with copper being shifted around a bit along with some mass?

Any new info on how Scenar 155gr L will do in .160 to .170 freebores and how much jump there is if loaded to to neck and shoulder junction of the case?

LOL, I bought some 120gr 6.5 Lapua bullets and they had the lapua emblem stamped into the
base of the bullet. They were the most accurate bullets I have ever shot in that rifle.

The -L- indicates a tighter QC standard than the standard Scenar.
They had an introductory pricing on the .224 77-L a couple of years back and once I tried those… I can’t go …. back to even SMK. Tighter rounder groups.

I have used 155 Scenars with good success many years ago, clear out to 1400 yds, with a 7.560" 5 shot group. Sent 17,000 of down range, 155 Scenar, Varget, Lapua brass, fed 210 match. Used 26" and 27" 12 twist barrels velocity around 2975- 2980 fps. Order the 155 bullets in quantities of 3000 bullets at a time to get a price break....and Varget was $112 for 8 lbs...

What are you seating these bullets to in regards to COAL ? If you have the 95 PALMA chamber it should have enough 'LEADE" ( FREEBORE) the LAPUA 155 SCENAR "L" should be fine.
