Weight sorting

What tolerance do you guys set when weight sorting your ammo? I've started out with +/- .04 grains, but ended up with 3 separate bins, and a large bin of "high/low" that I culled initially.

I'll rephrase; IF you weight sort your .22 match grade ammo, what tolerance do you set for your guideline +/- ?

And I'll add, have you found that it makes any difference in group size or amount of flyers?

This may not be of much help, however I have several buddies who use tools like this ( I do not know if they all use this brand) and they all say the results are solid.
My son and members of his shooting team also used rim thickness gauges and the juice was worth the squeeze to them.

Which version of Lapua have you tried? I have great luck with Center X out of my 40x but there is also Midas + and Exact.
Center X and Midas, but Center X does better. SK standard plus does about as well. Just trying to see if I can eliminate a flyer every now and then.

Thanks Mulligan, just trying to see what I can do to shoot a little better. ;) And I might even be able to make something similar even! Or use my own measuring instruments to check the rims! I appreciate the feedback!

I tried weighing with match ammo and even though there were slight variations I could never see the difference on paper.

I have also tried measuring and sorting by rim thickness and once again did not see the difference.

This was done with various brands of match ammo and shot in match grade rifles. Since I could not see the difference using mid to top grade ammo in a very accurate rifle I doubt that you will see any difference in a sporter. Using wind flags and paying attention to them will likely do more to eliminate flyers.

This is what I'm actually anticipating, but was going to test for myself to see. Thanks for your reply and sharing your results!

Got any suggestions better than Lapua or SK? Eley sucks in my CZ so it's out.

Which variety is no good? You need to test several flavours of the same ammo including different lots to determine which shoots best.

SK Std + (Yellow Box) is basic stuff, SK Rifle Match (Red box) is a step up and better.

Other flavours of SK are Biathlon (Blue Box), Pistol Match (Green Box) (some Anschutz users love it), SK Flat Nose Basic and Flat Nose Match (basically Std+ with flat nose & SK RM with flat nose).

Top end Eley Target ammo is Tenex (Red Box) (expensive), and then comes Match (Black Box) and Team (Blue Box). Don't forget to tru spme Eley Club as well.

All other Eley ammo is non match grade used for either sport shooting or game shooting.

RWS make great ammo, try RWS R50/RWS Special Match (Gold Box).

Testing is the name of the game.

Once you find a particular lot that shoots to your accuracy requirements, grab as much of it as you can.

This is why I was saying wind flags may be your best friend.

I just shot both these targets about 30 minutes ago - 50 yds, CCI S/V, Tikka T1x,

I shot the bottom target first - just a light flitting of the tails of the flags (surveyors tape)

I shot the top target next and if you notice it is now slightly more left because I had picked up a very slight left running breeze On the 3rd shot the flag jumped out about 45 degrees which equates to about a 5-6 mph breeze and it pushed the shot out almost a half-inch. If I hadn't had the flags I would not have known what caused it to go out that far and would have called it a flyer.

Yes, I've tested Eley match, Club, Tenex, Team, BR, Bullseye, etc, and they shot ok, but not as consistently good as Lapua Center X or SK standard plus. SK rifle match didn't shoot as good as SKSP even. Several others, TAC, CCI green tag, lower level stuff performed as you would expect for lower level ammo. I've not tried any X-Act yet tho as I've not been able to acquire any as of yet.

That's about what my 50 yard groups look like LOL I know the conditions are my biggest challenge, especially where I shoot on the Mtn. There's wind there even when there's no wind. Switches back and forth and pretty tricky to nail down.

Also shot Lapua OSP and Biathlon with lackluster results as well. I'm trying to save money for when X-Act comes back in stock tho :D

You should be aware that not all varieties of ammo -- be it Match, Tenex, Center X, or Midas +, for example -- shoots equally. All .22LR ammo is made in batches (called lots) and all batches are not the same.

Try different lots of any variety of match ammo and you'll see.

Find the OAL of the ammo the barrel likes and sort by length it works and the only sorting worth trying.
