weight sorting bullets

I was wondering when weight sorting bullets, how much variance is acceptable? Or should I just go all the way down to the .1 of a grain? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hoier,
I have ask this same question before. Some will tell you one thing others will tell you another. For my match loads I want them all the same,no varyence!! for general practice I sort them in dixie cups in .001 incraments if there are to many cups I will go .002 Some will tell you weight doesn't matter you need to measure the ogive to base of bullet and keep it within .001-.002 of each other, some do both. I am a both guy. If this is a medium range hunting rifle I wouldn't worry about it, well I would, but most would tell you not to worry about it,just load and shoot :)
I hope this helps some

I do sort by weight, when working up loads for groups.I then sort by Ogive.I suspect that if,say you have ten bullets with the same weight but slightly different Ogive, and you wanted to seat them .005 off the lands, you would need to adjust the seating stem to get the ogive length the same,at the distance off, you wanted.Do I have that procedure correct?

"Should Be" is the key. One would think they should all be the same seated depth, especially after you’ve spent the time sorting by weight and bearing surface. Once you seated all you loaded rounds and you think they are uniform go back through and measure each case from the base to the Ogive, you’ll be surprised. The only thing I can figure is the seater die contacts the bullet at a different place than the bullet comparator, well I'm sure it does. I’ve seen as much as .005” different in seating depth when measured after seating.

i grabbed my redding seating die and honed out the seater as much as i could, now my seater actually touches pretty darn close to the ogive. The difference is very noticeable when you start measuring from the base to ogive.

My sentiments exactly. To get things consistant,it seems a custom fitter seating punch would be necessary. The seating stem doesn't contact the ogive on the Sie 95 MKs that I seat. The ogive is 2/3 down from the tip.Oh well,it gives one something to do.

I posted this on another forum, but I think it may apply here too.

----------------------------------------------------------

We trim meplats, point and sort. Typically I seem to find only three weights with a semi-rare odd one. 174.9, 175 and 175.1. The odd one always seems to be 175.2. Spread allowance is 2/10ths. Meplat trimming comes close to equalizing projectile weights.
The trimmer indexes on the projectile's ogive, not the base. Once the brass is sized and trimmed we sort it by weight as well allowing no more that a two tenths spread. Out of 100 we'll typically have 6 different weight categories. Surprisingly, both Lapua and LR are neck and neck for consistency for us.
After reloading we also sort loaded cartridges by overall weight allowing no more than a three tenths spread. All sorts of sorts, but results are consistent and I make the time to do it.
Our private range is a 500 yard maximum.

maybe others I have talked to are right then, Light neck tension-seat way long -and let the bolt finnish seating the bullet upon closing?
Wayne.
