Weighing Cases

I weighed 100 .284 cases. At the urging of friends, I filled the cases with ball powder. To my surprise the powder was with in .1 of a grain.
Lapua brass.

The BALL Powder don't work. Larry

And the reason is???? Thx!
Ball powder will give you a different reading on weight. on how it is filled. First fill one with powder. Remove the powder and check it again. The same case will hold different weights . Take a long drop tube and a slow pour and the result will change again. Larry

This is where these threads tend to go sideways....

So if you are saying that ball powder doesn't work and you need a long drop tube, what are you then filling it with that works? Are you just trying to suggest that a different method might bring more repeatable results? I also don't think the OP stated the method he used to fill them.

What I'm saying is ball powder Does not repeat. Don't take my word for it try it your self .
I will be making a tool for sale. that repeats 10 times with .01 of accuracy .
It will be done from the shoulder Not from the OAL length

I'm having trouble understanding what you are using to get within 0.01 gr accuracy - ball powder? Flakes? Stick?

From what I can understand, it seems like you are referring to more of a method that will achieve accurate and consistent results rather than the powder type or other substance. The OP was using ball powder, What are you putting in the case to measuure the internal volume consistency?

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding something here.

What I said was ball powder or any powder will not work. With mine it will be a Liquid .
If you will look up Liquid you will see why. Larry

Thanks for the clarification - I look forward to learning more about your tool.
The prototype is giving the .01 results.
Just takes time to get the patent . Production material and cost is also a big factor.
Thanks Larry

As Larry stated it does take practice. The eror is in the man not the powder. Having a product for sale is what we call a conflict of interest. Remember the Redhead and Blond example. There can be more that one way yo do something right. It took me about 1/2 hour to be consistent filling the cases.

I look forward to the new product.

Weighing cases with ball powder works great for me. Procedure is the key. Reusing the same charge with a drop funnel and a slow funneling pour is how I get consistency and great repeatability.

I've played a bit w/the ball powder idea. I've found just dumping it from case to case doesn't give very consistant readings.....but three or four taps on the funnel for a consistant "settle" does seem to make things far more consistant.

Savagedasher I tend to agree with using ball powder, I use a 10" drop tub and with a little practice you can get really consistent! I use H-380 and I don't have to dry cases when I'm done. I tried Alcohol and even tried doing what I do with the ball powder, scrap the top with a razor blade. But to much of a mess, and one drop made a difference.Won't know if this is going to work till April, So no data. ;)
