Weed Eater Cord and Barrel Cleaning

Out of curiosity, would there be any harm in using weed eater cord to pull through with an oil soaked patch? I have been doing this on ocassion with my M1A TRW barrel along with a few 22's and never really thought about it harming a barrel. The procedure is to melt one end and form a ball so the patch will not come off then sharpen the other end so the patch can be stuck on.

Cheers,

Shawn

I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT WOULD HURT ANYTHING. iSNT ANY WORSE THAN SETTING OFF A 60,000 pound CHARGE WITH A BULLET AHEAD OF IT ,SAY 2000 TIMES IN ITS LIFE. Sorry caps lock on.

Been using it for years on my 22 RF's. Heat one end and blunt it on a stable top, cut the other end at an angle. Thread a patch on and threat the cord through the chamber to the muzzle. Pull the patch cord through being careful to be sure the cord is centered in the bore and not rubbing the crown.

Not used as a but helps for a quick cleaning at the range.

I've been doing this for years as I felt that a tight cleaning rod would do more damage than the weed eater cord. It has worked great for me and the best thing is it's cheap and cleans well. It also allows you to clean from the breach end as opposed to pushing a rod down the muzzle.

The Otis cleaning kits are the same principal and seem to do well but at an expense.

Thanks for the infornation.

I have been using the weed eater cord for many years for certain rifles. My concern was using the cord with a match barrel.

Cheers,

Shawn
