Weaver scopes for first rifle

I've looked through a few of them, thought about buying one, but decided that I would save up the few hundred more and buy a Sightron SIII 10-50X60. I thought the weaver optics were decent enough but didn't know about the fixed power, as I like options. There are some questions too, as to how far will you be shooting, where's the range located (i.e. haze, mirage, etc.)

For a general first target scope, they are not a bad deal.

I had a Weaver T-36x as the first scope on my 6ppc, in 1998. Thought it was basically "good", but I had issues with it. Depending on light conditions, I was not able to always spot my shots at 300 yds., so had to make sure I had a high quality spotting scope ready and waiting, if required. It was OK at 1 & 200 for that. On an overcast day it seemed to be darker than other scopes I've looked thru under the same conditions. Eye placement in relation to the eyepiece was very critical for me. Move my head/eye just a miniscule fraction of an inch & view would black out completely. It was sold & replaced with a Leupold BR36x, which I still have & use, although my primary match use scopes now are the Leupold Competition Series in 40x, and Nightfroce Benchrest 12-42x models. With these scopes I have none of the previousely described issues, but, for the cost difference I would not expect any. I do have 3 Weaver T-24x's and I find them to be excellent if you can get by with "only" 24x. None of the problems I had with the T-36x.

Whats your opinion on a weaver 36t scope for my first benchrest rifle.

I started with two of the Weaver T-36's with fine crosshairs, one on my 6PPC, and the other on my 30BR.

Eventually I moved up to two of the Leupold Competition 45X45's with fine crosshairs. I still use the 36, especially when mirage gets out of hand.

The Weaver T-36 is a very fine, well built scope.
