weaver scope issues

I have a Weaver 4x-16x classic V series scope. I went to sight it in on monday and i ran out of elevation adjustment. Is it a bad scope, bad mounts or gun issue? The gun is a Rem700 300RUM.

Thanks Doug

Doug: A classic problem that we have all had at one time or another. Some questions: Have you ever had another scope mounted on this rifle? Has the same scope been mounted on another rifle? What type of base mounts? If all is normal, then you need to "tilt" the front of the scope down, and/or raise the rear. If you have a one piece base mount you could shim the rear of the base giving more "up" clicks. The simplest solution that many of us use are the Burris Signature rings with the nylon inserts that permit the use of off-set nylon inserts allowing the scope to be pointed in any direction with reference to the centerline of the barrel. Burris Signature rings cost about $35 + $12 for the off-sets, for 1" scope tubes. Another solution would be the 10 or 20 moa base mounts that will also "tilt" the front of the scope down, at a cost of $80 to $100. The Burris rings will provide both elevation & windage correction, unlike the 10 or 20 moa base that will correct elev. only. You're not alone with this problem, an easy one to fix. ;)

It has a one piece mount and rings wich i beleave are leupold. and what i did was took the scope off this gun and the scope off another and switch them. When i went bore sight them is when i found the problem with the weaver. Now the other gun has the leupold 3x9 vxII and it bore sighted fine. I justed looked at and i think i may have had the scope back to far and the beging off the bell was in the ring. I moved it and i wil see what look's like after i bore site tonite.

doug: With the one piece base like the Leupold & Redfield, it's easy to shim the underside of the base. In your case you would need a shim under the rear of the base. Thickness is an unknown until you try it. I would first try about .010". I don't want to sound like I'm trying to sell you on Burris Signature rings, but they are made for the Standard Leupold & Redfield base's. With that combination then, you would have a tremendous amount of windage with the adjustment on the base and all you would ever need with the off-set rings for elevation. Just a note of warning. I do a lot of scope/rifle swapping and recently tried to mount one of my Nightforce benchrest 12-42x's on one of my Savage competition rifles. For whatever reason I was unable to get it sighted-in. At 50 yards, the point of impact was 2 1/2 feet to the left of the aiming point. I used up all my windage clicks to the right, and had the .010 off-set inserts in both front & rear rings, and was still approx. 12" left of center at 50 yds. This same scope has been on 5 or 6 other rifles, and the rifle has had 5 or 6 other scopes mounted, all trouble-free. For some reason, this scope/rifle combination will not work. First time I've ever had this problem, and still trying to figure it out.

Well I think I might have found the problem. When I put the scope on it was to far back and hitting the bell. Also when I put the bore sight in I had the muzzle brakes on it and I think it wasnt letting the bore sight sit right. I took the brakes all three guns and had plenty of adjustment in windage and elevation. When I go to range this weekend I'll let you know about my results.
