Weatherby Vanguard metric ?

Wanted to have local gunsmith install a new bbl on my Weatherby Vanguard . He said " That the threads are metric and his two lathes aren't equipped for metric " So can anyone suggest a gunsmith who can install a bbl ? I looked at Pac-nor they have "Pre fit" bbls for my rifle . Anyone have experience with those ?

Maybe the quote was metric too... I'm doing the same search, I'll let you know who I find.

As I understand it, there is more work on the howas to get the barrel off too. Can you send it to Krieger?

Hart rifles would be my pick but they told me it would be a 10-11 month wait, Spencer rifle barrels had a much shorter wait but can't remember. Both companys were very helpfull and paitient.

I have taken the barrels off of a few Howa 1500's (the same gin as the Vanguard) and always cut a relief on the barrel just in front of the receiver, then the barrel comes off very easily.

The Howas make a great base for building a very accurate rifle without breaking the bank.

HolySh---- Contacted that gunsmith for a barrel job they want $1200 bucks !

Damn.....that's a little over the top. What are you looking to have done to the barrel besides chambering?

I just want a 24" #4 contour bbl with a 8" rifling twist .

I've done a fair number of Howa's, I can't see where $1200 comes from at all. The barrels are on tight yes, but with the flat bottom action you can break em loose pretty easily. Takes a healthy whack with a brass bar for the impact, or part it at the shoulder as mentioned earlier. $225 for the install + blank price is all I've charged and it's a quick easy job.

Pac nor can produce high quality stuff. However you will need a smith to throat if you are shooting something special.

Took a barrel off a new Howa today with less effort than most Remington's.
Just had to try it before cutting a relief groove, must have been a early Christmas gift.

If a lathe is geared to do metric there should be no extra charge. Our lathe it is open the side cover and pop it to the other gear. And put a big piece of tape saying "METRIC!" on the front of lathe so you don't hate yourself on the next barrel.
