Weatherby Mark V ???

Any one out there know if a stainless Weatherby Mark V in 240 WBM has a 6 lug bolt or a 9 lug like the other Weatherby magnums???? This one is all stainless with a synthetic stock, {Weathermark ??} Any opinions or info on the Mark V action??? I keep hearing that the Vanguards are "better" and/or "more accurate", any truth or otherwise to this??? Those with experience, what do you think about the cartridge??? Thanks in advance for any info, as always it is greatly appreciated!!!!

Should be a six lug. I seem to recall seeing some 9 lug models for sale in ought six but I figured those were GunBroker typos.

Whichever pattern it is 6 or the 9 lug. It better be a smoking deal to put one in my safe. I've only shot one of the older Weatherby's ... Pretty is was, It felt funny to me. It had all it could do to keep up w a vintage 264 win mag Westerner One fine day. Back then we did not reload every caliber we shot. So the owner was stingy w the ammo due to the price. mikeinct

If it is of recent vintage, then six-lug standard action (vs nine-lug magnum action). Though they did previously build the 240 Wby in the nine-lug action many years ago. 240 Wby is a good varmint and deer round, but the default twist is too slow for modern high BC VLD/Hybrid bullets. Also, brass is expensive and sometimes hard to come by. But I like the cartridge, though I ordered it with a 7.75" twist krieger barrel. Freebore is 0.169" so not overly long like the larger Wby magnums. The 224 Wby also had a fairly normal freebore.

Thanks for all the replies so far fellas!!!
I am gonna guess that they are 1-in-10 twist?? I only intended to shoot 100-105 grain bullets anyways, so that should do it, right?? I mean. there probably isn't too many deer or black bear that can stand a 100 grain Partition @ 3200fps.
Here's another question, was the 224Weatherby made on a different or special action?? Thanks again!!!

Earlier 224 Wby Mark V Varmintmasters had an even smaller six-lug action which was perfectly sized for 22-250 or 224 Wby cartridges.

240 Wby is still using 1:10” as default twist per their website.

You can achieve the same ballistics with a 6-284 or a 6-06 if you are a handloader and then have some choice about brass sources. I've seen very few multi-lug Weatherbys where all the lug were touching. I believe you could get a Vanguard action and have a premium barrel installed for about the same money or less and I sure would expect better accuracy. Or for that matter, any other good action. Besides the impressive speed, you need accuracy for bullet placement. For a number of years I lusted for the .240, always stopped by the price of the MK V and the brass/ammo. Went the 6-284 and the 6-06 route and never regretted it. I'm a Partition fan, but the only Partition I've had fail to exit on a deer or elk was a 100 gr. on a big whitetail out of a 6-06 improved at about 140 yds. Just too much speed for a bullet designed for .243/6mm Rem. speeds (and it was a lung shot, not shoulder bone shot). Probably farther out it would have performed just fine since the impact speed would've been slower. Don't have an improved anymore, the straight 6-06 does just fine. The 6-284 is a slow twist for LR varmint work.

I'll second that. But either way, everyone should own a high-stepping 6 of one flavor or another. The 6-284 on a Howa long action should have no trouble squeaking by the 240 with great brass available.

No disagreements here. But I still like blued steel and fancy grade claro walnut so a custom shop Mark V 240 Wby with a blued chrome moly krieger barrel with a 7.75" twist was just the thing for me. I bought one of the 9-lug models back in grad school so I already have dies and unlimited brass. But the new rifle is way lighter and better looking!

Mine is a 9 lug, made in West Germany.
It’s got some bumps and bruises but still is plenty accurate for hunting varmints and deer. I have thought of having a new barrel put on but it still shoots too good to mess with.
