Weatherby barrels???

Anyone out there know who currently makes Weatherby barrels??? At least since they left Japan. Thanks in advance for any info!!!

The last time I knew for certain who made a factory barrel I had, it was one of their MV TRR barrels, made then by Criterion, or possibly before the split, Krieger Criterion.

I have two SVM in 22-250 and they are from the time Kreiger-Criterion was providing barrels.
Criterion informed me they no longer have a contract to provide barrels for Weatherby.

My Weatherby Vanguard is the worst shooting rifle I have ever seen. 2-3” groups at 100 with match ammo. I don’t think even a new barrel could save it.

Have you really checked all the things it might need to shoot tighter groups ? Bedding, etc. If all is correct and it still does not shoot to your satisfaction, then re-barrel and you should find you have a good action/rifle that will do the job.

I have the Series II Vanguard with the 2 stage trigger in a 223 Rem. Mine is a sub 1 moa rifle.

Mine came from the factory with the barrel in full contact with the forearm of the stock the entire length. I thought this might be a factory misfitted stock so I called customer service and they told me it was designed that way for the synthetic stocks. With some load development I got it to shoot within their claimed accuracy of 1 moa. averaging about .9 to 1.0. I free floated the barrel and it improved slightly to about .6 to .7 which is serviceable.

I like the design of the rifle's extractor system, the 3 position safety and while I'm not a fan of 2 stages triggers, mine breaks clean at 2.7 lbs. after adjustment. I like the 7.5 lbs weight and the 24" barrel. The stock is stiff enough for accurate shooting.

The biggest problem I've had was mine had a rough chamber and the cases would stick making extraction difficult. My rifle smith polished the chamber and it helped but I still get an occasional case that sticks but extracts with some applied force to the bolt. I use this rifle as practice rifle during the winter months so I can live this defect. At some point I may rebarrel since I really like the Howa action.

If I had it to do over again I'd opted for a Tikka instead.

Wow fellas!!! I am very surprised to hear you guys are having accuracy issues...I asked about the barrels because I am very happy with the two rifles I have. I also have a good friend I hunt/shoot with that has three Weatherby's and his shoot fantastic too. We put good triggers in them, but other that that all of ours will touch bullets at 100 yards off a bench.
I have a Mark V in 240WM and a Vanguard in 257WM and both shoot factory ammo as good as reloads. In fact, I tell folks that since the price of the ammo came down and it shoots so good it almost don't make sense to reload.
I have always heard others say the Vanguards shoot better than the Mark V's so I was a little worried about the 240, but it shoots fantastic.
Years ago I had a 270 and it shot great too, but it was the most unlucky rifle I have ever owned so I got rid of it.
The West German made guns were hammer forged?? I am guessing the Howa made guns were button?? Criterion barrels are some kind of spin-off of Krieger, are they cut ?? If Shaw is doing it now they are buttoned too, or at least they always were. Haven't used one of those in a long time.

My MkV Criterion was a button rifled barrel and it flat hammered. Of course it was a 257 wby mag and they really shoot well...

Early last year (2019), the Weatherby custom shop offered a krieger barrel option. I'm not seeing that option in their current Mark V custom shop page. In fact, their custom options seem to be vastly reduced compared to years past. Are they effectively dropping out of the custom shop business?

The problem with E.R. Shaw is that they want the same money today that much better barrel makers that actually make and sell match grade barrels want. Problem is they are not match grade barrels. At half the current price I would support anyone building a hunting rifle with an ER Shaw barrel. At the current price you would have to give me one!

E.R. Shaw has no quality control so their products truly represent the bell shaped curve we all know so well. There are better products for equal of less money.

ERS foul badly. When New Ultra Light Arms went to them that is everyone's problem. A cold bore shot is fine but groups are all over the place and they copper foul badly.

Do you know melvin?

No HOWA hammer forges just like all large OEM's.

To be honest if you wanted any barrel burner to have a chance at having decent life you would only use CHF barrels. You get 3X to 8X the barrel life with CHF over button rifled or cut rifled barrel. You do not buy a Weatherby for tack driving accuracy or long barrel life.

I had never heard this before about the long life of cold hammered forge barrels. That’s the most interesting thing I’ve read on here in a while.
