Weatherby 307 action with defiance barrel???

So I posted something about this in the wrong sub forum so I’ll make this as short as possible. I started this project because I wanted to build my son a gun that fits his needs that doesn’t break the bank.

Will a Prefit barrel for defiance fit in a weatherby 307 action?

The threads are both 1 1/16 x16
307 tenon is .880 long and headspace’s at .899 with recoil lug of .191
Defiance tenon is .950 and headspace’s at .959 with recoil lug of .250

So replace the .191 barrel lug on the 307 with a .250… (.899 - .191 = .708, .708 + .250 = .958) and we’re 1 thou off…

What do you think?

Put it together and check it with headspace gauges, If the headspace is too long take the recoil lug to a machine shop and have it ground on a surface grinder the amount you need.
The only problem I could see is if the barrel threads for the tenon are too large.

Because the action was mfd. by PTG, I'm not sure I would trust the actual measurements are to the print.

Ptg doesn’t manufacture the 307, weatherby does. I have the gauges coming and was thinking the same thing about grinding down the tenon. Thx sniper handle

Numbers are great. We couldn't do much without them. But, I physically want to measure with my depth mic, so I can see exactly where I am at. I what to know how much brass is not fully in the chamber, how much 'stick out' there is. On the other side, I want to make sure the end of the bolt is not even slightly touching the barrel.

How much brass is unsupported should be the number one priority as stated above. As too much could really ruin your day!

Correct me if I’m wrong… wouldn’t it be the same as in a defiance action? That is if I get the brass to seat fully in the chamber.

PTG was selling them for around $450.00 about 6 months ago, I thought you may have been one of the lucky ones that actually got what you paid for from them. I figured they were making them, May have been wrong. They made a lot of actions and bolts for other OEM companies.

I just read Weatherby's page on them, It says they take standard rem 700 pattern barrels, Why wouldn't you get one of those as opposed to a Defiance prefit?

Price and availability.

Not too many guys are making the 307 prefits. Defiance barrels are in stock several places by several different barrel manufacturers. At times they go on clearance and can be had at 1/2 price.

I found a Prefit defiance barrel in the caliber I want for $500. If it works I’d possibly do another. A carbon barreled action for about a grand seems like a dang good deal to me.

Ptg is still selling the 307 for $500 with a trigger. As of late I’ve had pretty good luck with them. I know the horror stories of the past. For the best up to date info call, they can tell you if it’s actually in stock. It seems as though Ptg is trying to turn things around.

Quick update. After doing a little more digging, the distance off the bolt face to barrel from the 307 and the defiance are different. I calculated I need a .256 thick barrel lug. Thank you @shortgrass for pointing me in that direction.

Anyhow I received the action. I spun the barrel on and took a measurement and wouldn’t you know that number is .256. I’m excited that the number I calculated and my measurements are the same. The ground barrel lug has been on order for a while now. Hopefully it comes in soon and I can triple confirm that it’s correct. I don’t have any reason to believe it’s not at this point, I just like congruence.

most all the defiance actions that come through my shop headspace around .967+/- .001

I’d recheck your .959 headspace measurement

I absolutely will. Thank you.

I actually pulled it off a tenon print. I found some conflicting info and ordered a barrel lug on the new information I found. I ordered a .256 barrel lug, based on what you’re saying I should have ordered a .259. Anyhow when everything arrives I’m going to use a go gauge and check to make sure everything specs out.

I am using the 307 action but with a defiance Prefit barrel.

I got a recoil lug in that was .258 thick. The go gauge and no go gauge closed. I took 2 thou off down to .256 and no go stopped just short and go gauge closed.

Stumpy little guy, ain’t it!??
