We may have lost our indoor range!

" At least there's enough divots to make me believe it."

Each one a potential low angle ricochet over a berm. We have been able to address several such incidents since the installation of a couple cameras and an access card controlled gate to the ranges.

Obviously, this is all done after the fact. But it seems the word is spreading that there is a good chance you will be caught if you break the rules even if there are none of the RSO's present. The honor system depends on people being honorable. At some point we will have to have an RSO on site for any shooting to take place. Volunteers that will assume that responsibility are few and far between these days.

I belong to two different private Clubs, neither of which employs paid RSO's. The range safety rules are posted all over the place, each member gets a copy when the join or renew and they are required to hold their guest accountable for following the rules as well. Most members are careful to follow the rules but the idiot 10% who don't cause us untold grief and money. When I call someone on a rule violation I explain why the rule exists and that they can be suspended or expelled from the Club for violations. Members are all responsable for enforcing the Club rules but often will ignore someone breaking them. If all members would enforce the rules we would go a long way toward stopping bad behavior. I have the reputation of being a "prick" about range safety and rules, something I am quite proud of, and wish more Club members would be too.

Monday night is our gallery pistol match and me and the president of the club found a bunch of 556 brass in the brass bucket. This threw up red flags right now and caused major concern because the 50 foot range is designed for handgun only! Well last night I got the e-mail that the indoor facility is closed until further notice. Looks like another AR-tard may have screwed us royal. The club voted last month to install a DVR/camera system to stop this foolishness and if they have not shot out the bullet trap system I bet it will remain closed until the cameras are installed if they damaged the trap then we will be out for a very long time.
sorry to hear this. camera sounds like a good idea, prob not too expensive? Here's hoping for a good resolution & that your range stays open!

thats a shame. I find it really enjoyable spending time with friends on the range. Just so happens to be in N.C., where some of the finest shooters I’ve ever know live or come to shoot. You must have been at a less than desirable range because the ones I’ve been members of across the state or go to for matches have been top notch. Never seen an ND, only witnessed one major incident which was shooter induced due to a squib load and improper remedial action. We have some issues from time to time of people littering, parking on the grass, stapling targets you the posts instead of the backer, etc. But never anything beyond that. My current range had 600 members and I’ve not had a problem other than what I mentioned above. Not sure why my experiences shooting over the last 25+ years have been so vastly different. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky.
This is a public range, that is the difference. Plenty of superb shooters in NC, that is for sure. Gun friendly place, too. I'm spoiled by shooting alone, I guess. Also kind of keep to myself, so maybe the experience at a public range is heightened for me. Here's hoping ALL ranges stay open & safe :)

AR-tard, AR idiot

my favorite is when they set up on the bench to my left and get pissed at me when I explain I would prefer my $2000.+ scope doesn’t get brass fired at it

Sometimes you just have to put up with other shooters because they have a right to be there too.
I shoot both a very nice bench gun as well as AR's and other platforms. I try to set up away from other shooters when I am using the AR, but I have as much right to use the range as anyone else, and if you are offended when I set up next to you, then leave. Your $2000 scope does not buy you special privileges.

My range had a bewildering event take place... shooter standing 600 yard berm gets hit in the back by a 9mm. It basically fell at his feet where he found it when he turned around to see what hit him. The round had traveled +600 yards from a cross range shot before it encountered this member. Someone was shooting an AR9 and either accidentally fired./lobbed a mortar trajectory or was trying to shoot a bird out of the sky. Club installed a $100k baffle system on 100 yard range designed to stop any bullet from going over the berm... yes there are already holes.

Our 50 yard range really looks like a Warthog did a strafing run.... everyone shooting off a bench...

Very True. 1.; I don't own an AR that throws brass at 2:30 - 3:00. 2; I typically set up a catch net on top of a tripod positioned to catch my brass. 3; a $2000 scope still doesn't buy any special privileges, 4; sometimes I think that people forget to have tolerance for other shooters because they perceive themselves to be superior since they believe they have spent more money.

Maybe not superior but still has a right to not have hot brass invade his space and break his concentration or do monetary damage. Just because you have a right to be there thats not a license to be a douchebag like somebody talking in a movie theatre. It all boils down to treating people like youd want to be treated not being selfish just because youre entitled to be there

At Palo Alto we have cameras on every firing line. Members sign in. Rules go out to new members. Electronic gate cards next month. No excuses. Safety first. You screw up, you’re out!! I’ve seen a seasoned open shooter d’qued for crossing the firing line to pick up a piece of brass while the line was still hot, at a state match!
We have very few problems.......

People acting like douche-bags on the range typically get sorted out pretty quickly. But, when on a public range, you have no right to not having your concentration broken, only a general understanding and courtesy. And, monetary damage not caused by negligence is your issue to deal with. And, I hate it when people talk in the movie theater, just plain rude and obnoxious. Like I said, I try to be courteous to other shooters, I also ask the same of other shooters. I also am the guy who keeps people following the range rules and take my share of abuse.

Took this pic yesterday. I guess the AR magdumper figured Mom would be up later to clean up his mess of scrap steel. SMH
