We may have lost our indoor range!

Monday night is our gallery pistol match and me and the president of the club found a bunch of 556 brass in the brass bucket. This threw up red flags right now and caused major concern because the 50 foot range is designed for handgun only! Well last night I got the e-mail that the indoor facility is closed until further notice. Looks like another AR-tard may have screwed us royal. The club voted last month to install a DVR/camera system to stop this foolishness and if they have not shot out the bullet trap system I bet it will remain closed until the cameras are installed if they damaged the trap then we will be out for a very long time.

Next to our outdoor pistol range, there's a HUGE sign stating TRADITIONAL handgun cartridges only. Go there on a Sunday and wait all day. You'll see the jitterbug magdumpers pull out their ARs and go to town. Same with the rifle range, the sign says NO SHOTGUNS. In the weeks before deer season, it'll be littered with shotgun shells. It's sort of like the traffic signs. Some people think they're just suggestions.

Could be someone just getting rid of some of their old brass. Our range is handgun only, but people will bring rifle brass that they don't have a use for anymore and put it in the scrap bucket for anyone that wants it or the scrap man. I did that with some 6mm Remington brass after I switched to 6XC. It was gone in a day.

I was a member of an indoor range in Arlington WA for a while. They allow up to 5.56 but keep a close eye on things. Range is only 25 yards. Back stops are cut up rubber. Some AR idiot went in there and was shooting tracer rounds and caught the place on fire. They were closed for about 1.5-2 years.

At another club, our rifle range the 500 yard line is closed except for matches because you are firing over the 100/200 yard line. For a while we were finding AR 5.56 shells up on the 500 yard line. One time came in for a match and they must have left in a hurry as we found their shooting mat still there. Club has had to add cameras to try and keep this under check. There are too many houses just outside of the club property to have idiots not following the rules. Haven't heard of this for a while. Maybe the cameras are doing their job.

There will always be those that disregard the rules and ruin it for the rest of us.

Could be but I doubt it, president was going to inspect the trap on Tuesday during the daylight hours and Tuesday night is when the e-mail went out kinda making me think they found something bad.

Our club supposedly has cameras at least that is what is well known but the cameras are not visible. It is such a nice facility that no one dares chance disobeying rules.

We have not found anymore evidence of unauthorized use of the 500 yard range that you are referencing. It, however, is a constant vigil to make sure that people follow the rules...

Uhggg I feel all your pain... As an RO at my range there's a 60 yard pistol range outdoors of course and big signs that say no targets closer than 25 yards... If they move them closer sometimes the bullets will bounce off the ground and go over the burm so it's a safety thing....

EVERY damn time I work and the range is open to the public I have to go get on to somebody... There's 3 other 30 yard ranges that they can shoot at and shoot under 25 yards but they go to the one that's clearly posted and move the target stands closer than the clearly marked 25 yard line... Last idiot was standing under the sign... They way I figure it now is the sign told you once , then I told you once , the next time is a ban... It's not that hard and I have more important things to do than baby sit people that are desperately trying to ruin it for everyone else....

As far as rifles why would you shoot them 25 yards , they shouldn't be allowed at indoor ranges because to me they are just blasting away , nothing to learn... I can see maybe an open sight .22 but anything else , come on....

A guy i work with asked me if i could load him up some 223 ammo. I said sure what you need? He said it dont matter hes going to blast it from his ar. I said how many you need? He said he wanted 5000. He caught his ak handguard on fire the week before. Needless to say he thought my price was a bit high for blasting ammo. He doesnt even save his brass and shoots over 1000 every weekend- said he had some kind of electric magazine loader too. That must be how he is able to dump those mags

Sad that idiots ruin a good thing for good people.if have cameras they would be paying for damage.

Couldn't agree more. Clubs spend a lot of money to monitor and regulate the members and their guests. Money that could be used to maintain or upgrade the facilities. It is a shame that something so simple has to turn into a nightmare because people just don't want to follow the rules.

That is good news. The club, all clubs for that matter, work very hard to provide a great resource for us to use. The majority of members make concerted effort to ensure that they and others follow the rules and respect the privilege, to ensure that the resource will be there for all of us to enjoy for years to come.

In the past few years our club has banned Tannerite, steel targets and had to replace a sporting clays trap machine because the idiots shot it up. All of this crazy crap is directly linked with the AR platform and what I would call "kids". They all show up dressed for the part like a Chris Kyle wannabe, shoot a crap ton of rounds at targets at 25 and 50 yards leave their targets up and steel cases everywhere it's actually pretty sad. Me I go down on days when nobody is there and trim weeds and tree limbs back and remove large rocks from the berm that have surfaced.

We have had to replace a ton, almost a ton, of steel targets because AR guys at shooting penetrator/ steel tips. This year we lost everything past 700 yards because it is on forest land outside of our lease and apparently these rounds can spark off the steel and start of fire. That is what we were told regardless of how far an AR can shoot. We would lose our lease if we started a fire off our land. They missed picking up one steel target at 1,500 yards though !

Man, I sure am glad no one with a bolt gun ever fouls something up. All these damned AR-15 shooters are ruining everything for the rest of us. It’s not the type of rifle fellas, it’s the person behind it. Let’s try to remember we’re all on the same team here.

I agree we're all on the same team, or at least should be. However it's been my experience around my neck of the woods that the dedicated shotgun only shooters will sell you out faster than the anti-gunners would.

+++ Our range has 400+members. Each one goes thru a 1.5 hour orientation class that includes a written test at the end. 90% of the problem behavior that has been caught on video and reported by members happens on the pistol range. Improperly placed targets that potentially cause low angle ricochets, sweeping others on the line with the muzzle, drawing from the holster, and whatever else you can imagine. One case several years ago involved shoots fired a night using the headlights on a vehicle to illuminate the target.

For awhile we would find the chains holding the 300 yard steel up shot in half with a pretty nice group in the support structure where the chain anchors. Not an accident and not from an AR.

We have had steel damaged on the rifle range with '06AP ammo fired in bolt guns. People have lost their memberships and range access for violations committed by all types of firearms. Normally offenders ,depending on severity of offense, get a suspension and must retake the orientation class.

If we loose our right to own firearms we will lose it by one firearm type at a time starting with the ones to be perceived as being the most threatening.

Shooters of all disciplines must stick together. Educate correct and discipline our own club membership ranks. I am a resident of Virginia and things are not pleasant here now, division in the ranks is not a good thing.

PS Edit Even our clubs die hard shotgun shooters have been "woke" this time around.

Holy crap, someone needs to hold his head underwater for just a little while.......

I have not shot on a range w others in a decade. Well coupla times in N.C. Scared the s**t outta me, those guys. Worst shooters ever, RO kept us all alive :) I'll take the high desert by my lonesome. fwiw.

I'm from NC, not knocking Tarheels! ... but public ranges can be scary, tho.

thats a shame. I find it really enjoyable spending time with friends on the range. Just so happens to be in N.C., where some of the finest shooters I’ve ever know live or come to shoot. You must have been at a less than desirable range because the ones I’ve been members of across the state or go to for matches have been top notch. Never seen an ND, only witnessed one major incident which was shooter induced due to a squib load and improper remedial action. We have some issues from time to time of people littering, parking on the grass, stapling targets you the posts instead of the backer, etc. But never anything beyond that. My current range had 600 members and I’ve not had a problem other than what I mentioned above. Not sure why my experiences shooting over the last 25+ years have been so vastly different. Perhaps I’ve just been lucky.

Our indoor range closed after the owners wife kept taking all the cash out of the register and going to Reno and gambling it all away. And I had just bought a year membership the month before they shut the doors.
