WC872 Powder -- Good for what Cartridges?

Is anyone using this? Back when Widener's was selling it for dirt cheap I bought a bunch becauseI shoot a fifty and I thought I'd never again see powder that cheap. I use it for plinking rounds in my 50bmg, but I know I could use it in my 7STW and 338RUM among others.

Anyone using it? In what cartridges?

I use WC870 in .25-'06 with 115 - 120 grain bullets. I have a 28" TC Pro Hunter barrel and that helps get the most out of the powder.

I realize WC870 is a bit faster than WC872 on average (lot-to-lot variation may result in overlap) but it is great in the .25-'06 with the heavies. It's also the ticket for heavier bullets in the 7mm Rem Mag.

Increase the capacities a bit (like 7mm Rem Mag to 7mm STW and .25-'06 to .257 Wby) and WC872 should be great. Like most ball powders, it does not like to be compressed heavily.

I like the fact that I can't get enough in the case to give me pressure concerns. At least in the .25-'06.

This post makes me sad. It makes me sad because Wideners had such great deals on powder and bullets before they sold the business. Now they don't even sell powder at all.
If you're looking for surplus powder at a good price, try www.gibrass.com.

I hear ya re: Wideners!

Was this recent? Because up until 6 months ago the ~ weekly email "reloading specials" were awesome. Many deals close to 50% off. For the last several months its been more like 5% off, with the same tired items over and over...

They got out of Powder & Primers back in March 2017. Below is an email reply from Max at Widener's after I sent him an email inquiry about Powder & Primers. (BTW: I bought out their RL-50 while it was on Sale/Clearance)

Hi Jim,

Thank you for checking in. Unfortunately you are correct, we will no longer be carrying powders or primers. Storage and transport rule changes along with rising fees have made it near impossible to continue selling at any kind of profit without cranking the prices way up. We will still be carrying bullets and brass as well as factory loaded ammo, but we are sorry to say the hazmat selection will be no more.

i don't like the fact that they moved it from Johnson City and you can't go pick things up anymore! I won't buy from them.. because i don't want to pay the shipping along with the state taxes as well. and then add in hazmat if you are getting something in that line..
But now with no worry about Hazmat stuff.. i am not surprised really.. still won't be using them..

I have used wc872 in a 7x300 wby and 300 wby and have found that they are simular to h870.

I hear ya about Weidner's, I was born in Johnson City and looked forward to weather report when I talked to someone at the store. as far as WC 872. Ive used it in 338 Lapua, 300RUM, 7RUM. I thank you for info on 25-06 I will try it soon.

I miss their store front. Way back they used to sell all things reloading. I bought my first dies and tools from them as well as a cleaning rod. After they got rid of the store front you could still do pick up. If I recall correctly, things started going down hill in 2013 during components shortage. They seemed to not have much during those couple of years after Sandy hook. I guess supply and demand played a role. You can't sell what you don't have and therefore don't make profit. They didn't rip you off on powder or primers. People would buy from them and resale. They always had military powder galore.

I’ve used it in 7mmMag with 175’s, 300 Tomahawk with 240’s and 338 Tomahawk with 250 and 300. My experience was somedays it shot good and other days it didn’t. Could’ve been me though. I no longer use it.

So probably decent powder for my 28 Nosler running big 195gr pills. I see some reports that it runs dirty until higher pressure is reached. Do you still run it and is it comparatively dirty to h870?

If you could use H870, you will like WC872. I used in in a 300Jarret when i could not get H870 anymore and it was close. I've got a gun that started life as a 300 win mag and a friend rechambered it to 300 Jarett. we shot out that barrel and it has a 300RUM on it now. I am using Wc 872 with it and the new 300RUM i am building. i think i have over 20lbs left.

What would be a good start point for h870 in a 338 edge with 250 to 300 grain bullets. Not trying to steal of this thread.

i cannot tell you. H870 was almost gone when the RUM cartridges came out, and the edge did not appear till later. I don't know if there is professional data or not. Hodgdon US 869 was brought out to make all the screamers that wanted H870 be quiet. If it were me i would ask Hodgdon if US869 data would be a good place to start. If you are talking about WC872 the guy at GI brass would be the go to guy for data, I can't remember his name right now. Wait Jeff Bartlet, i think.

I don't use it any more because I don't have a 7/300 or 300 Wby. anymore. Also I don't know if you can use it in a 28 nosler. With the wc872 I had it stated to use H870 load data.
