Waxing a rifle stock

Crew, I just refinished 3 walnut stocks (hunting) with blo and tung oil, and was thinking about waxing them. Is it something you recommend, and if so what wax is best? Thanks, Barlow

I use my wife's furniture polishing rag to wipe and buff my oil finish stocks. I don't know what it is but it works and smells good.

Right, wrong or indifferent, I recently finished a stock of mine with tung oil first, covered in spar varnish. I used spray cans, and did it in my garage. Not the cleanest, or best way to apply. After I let it cure a little bit, I used some automotive "scratch and blemish remover". I think it is meguiars. I polished it with that and it definitely made it smoother and still shiney. I would do it on a test piece of wood first. But I wouldnt hesitate to do it again. I was very pleased.

I let Tru-Oil sit 3 weeks after the last coat then you can buff with Mequiars Medium or Fine Cut Cleaner. Then wait two days and apply Mequiars wax. The medium or fine cut selection depends on what grit scratch marks are in the finish and how much shine you want.. Fine Cut takes out 1200 grit marks. I hand buff only with a oil finish. Always let the finish harden for at least 2 weeks.

heydogman has done this before-- take his advise and DO NOT get in a HURRY, especially about letting it cure for at least 3 weeks.

Yes sir, I learned that the hard way after 65 hours of a hand applied oil/varnish finish on a show truck cherry bed.
