Warning / Graphic / What went wrong? OU skeet gun blow out

Title provides caution / NOT pleasant.
A friend sent this to me.. The OU shotgun blew out the side of bottom barrel and caused severe damage to shooters hand. No one can confirm exact cause but it was not a hand loaded shell. They think he chambered by mistake a 20 ga shell and then the correct gauge shell 12.. The 20 slid down the bbl until the rim interfaced with the beginning of the forcing cone and stopped. Thus blockage and result.

Thanks for posting this, I mean it sincerely. It just may prevent another accident.

The more familiar we become with firearms the more careful we need to be and not taken anything for granted.

I hope the injured gentlemen recovers; that really looks bad.

Something similar happened while I was at the pistol range a few years ago. A new shooter had a sub-compact 45 ACP he had just purchased at Cabela's for "home defense". After the first shot, he wrapped his other hand high around the stock in attempt to control the violent recoil and the slide sliced his thumb down to the bone.

I had a first aid kit in the truck and was able to apply enough pressure to stop the bleeding. He declined my offer to take him to ER even though he needed stiches. Never saw him again at the range.

Terrible. I had a pretty bad hand injury a few years ago... involved cut tendons and nerves and things.

That dude is in for 8-12 weeks in a cast... and then 4-6 months of very painful physical therapy if he ever wants to use what they salvage of that thumb. Do what they say. Do it exactly how they say to do it. You'll have to get up every few hours at night and do work on it as well. Do it.

Good warning. I remember them telling us about this in Hunter Ed, called it the 12-20 burst if I remember right.

I hope that poor guy heals up okay.
I'm starting my next class April 3. Mark, would it be ok to capture those 2 photo's and intigrate them with others I share with the class? From the looks of it, it looks like the blowout is in the right place for a 20 ga obstruction in a 12 ga. Something that my team goes over every evening that includes gun handling.
